Guess the Artist (Detroit Institute of Arts) #4

This is the fourth installment of Guess the Artist at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Some of you well seasoned artists may get this right off. Let me know ;)

The answer is below, click to read more about it on the DIA’s website – check out the provenance – wow, pretty darn cool! Link provided…

Do you know who the artist is? Here’s the answer… (Information via Detroit Institute of Arts):

Mosquito Nets, 1910 Oil on Canvas – by John Singer Sargent, (American, 1856-1925)

Unframed: 22 1/2 × 28 1/4 inches

Read this blip from the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA.ORG):

Mosquito Nets is a beautiful example of Sargent’s ability to translate a momentary impression into a masterful composition. The picture represents the artist’s sister Emily with her friend Eliza Wedgwood, a member of the famous porcelain manufacturing family. It was painted in Valdemosa, Majorca, where the three were spending an autumn holiday. There, in Eliza’s words, “Sargent painted in oils such an amusing picture of Emily and me—in what John called ‘Garde Mangers,’ Emily’s invention for keeping out mosquitoes.” In this intimate and affectionate view, we see the women close-up and at a diagonal angle, reminiscent of “snapshot” views used by Cassatt and Degas. Emily is seated in an armchair and rests against one of the red pillows from the sofa beside her; Eliza is reclining on the sofa.

In addition, the placard next to the painting had interesting information:

“Look for signs of quick brushwork in the black skirts, wall decoration, and wispy mosquito nets. Sargent’s decision to leave visible brushstrokes makes this painting feel spontaneous – it freezes a brief moment in time. He painted his sister and their friend while vacationing on the Spanish island of Majorca.” – DIA

How cool is that information? This is why I say this place is a treasure. So much information, in person, online and any way you can get it. I can’t wait to go back!

My family and I had the best time visiting the DIA while we were visiting in Detroit. What a great city, so much change – and this place, the Detroit Institute of Arts – it’s a treasure.
