Whimsy. This painting is packed with it. Joyful colors, people floating, a heart, an arrow about to pierce the heart, random people – what does this all mean? Oh, I just noticed something else that’s very cool! But try to guess the artist first. Answer is below. #giveitatry
The description on the placard next to the painting reads (contains a clue!):
Notice the heart, floating right of center, about to be pierced by Cupid’s arrow. In this fanciful painting, the self-taught artist depicts herself on the balcony surveying memories of old loves, some real and others imagined.
Part of a lively social scene in New York, she was friends with prominent artists, writers and intellectuals, some of whom are pictured here.
Can you guess this week’s artist? Answer…
A N S W E R :
Love Flight of a Pink Candy Heart, 1930
- Florine Stettheimer, American, 1871-1944
Oil on canvas
- Unframed: 60 × 40 inches (152.4 × 101.6 cm)
- 65 1/2 × 45 1/2 × 2 1/2 inches (166.4 × 115.6 × 6.4 cm)
Gift of Miss Ettie Stettheimer
I gave two clues with the description – it was a female and she was self-taught. Still, not an easy guess by any means! Actually three clues, because the year this was painted (1930) is part of the iron scrollwork on the balcony! How clever.
