Thirty years ago (!!) this week, my husband was awarded a top ten US National Champion ribbon and plaque. He was one of the only riders who served as their own trainer. Of course, he didn’t do it alone, SGF Cimarron worked impeccably as he followed the given commands beautifully. This is one of the official photographs (taken by a real photographer – I have tried to find him to add a link but am unsure of the spelling as I have tried every possible configuration I can think of).
Cimarron stood a majestic 15 1/2 hands (he had presence!). Fred started training Cimarron at a young age, and taught him everything he knew. They worked daily. And by that I mean every single day. I would go to the farm on days I wasn’t working and watch the two. The effortless beauty on both of their parts was awe inspiring .
Man and horse. A connection and an understanding. Cimarron trusted Fred and knew he was destined to do great things with his life. Top Ten US National Champion is a pretty big deal. To get to the Nationals you have to go to the Regional shows and do quite well. You need place in the top 5 to qualify to compete for the US Nationals (1994 it was in Louisville, KY). Cimarron’s regional wrap up for 1994 was one regional championship and one reserve regional championship behind his belt. Not too shabby.
After many years training and riding, it was time to move on. Cimarron moved to Texas (with a stable overlooking a stunning in-ground pool on a farm quite like something you would see on TV). The young girl went on to win numerous National Championships with her trainer and her as the rider. Bittersweet. I’ll never forget the day he was picked up by the transport company. All of our hearts broke. 💔 But in the end he was happy, and he deserved every bit of his new life. ❤️
Hard to believe this was thirty years ago – time flies. Run out and do what you love – and more importantly, LOVE what you do!
🏇 Until next time…

WOW – 30 years, great memories, thanks to my wife and parents for all the love and support!
