Happy October 1 y’all! 🍁 Thrilled that fall is in the air. I know you’re all looking forward to more comfortable weather, pulling out sweaters and cooking more meals at home. I know I am! On to today’s post… Many of you will know of this iconic scene set in a fabulous place in a cool city in the US. What state? What city? Where was I when I took this photo? Who’s the artist? Do you know?
Answer…
What a brilliant work of art that depicts the area it’s in so well. Absolute perfection showing the hard work and ingenuity that Detroit is known for. Of course, I was at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) – and this magnificent mural along with many more are works of Diego Rivera!

About the Artwork
The themes established on the east wall are continued on the west wall, where the technologies of the air (aviation) and water (shipping and pleasure boating) are represented in the upper panels. The half-face/half-skull in the central monochrome panel symbolizes both the coexistence of life and death as well as humanity’s spiritual and physical aspects, while the star symbolizes aspirations and hope for civilization. This heraldic image introduces another major theme of the cycle: the dual qualities of human beings, nature, and technology. Vertical panels on each side of the west entrance to the court introduce the automobile industry theme through the representation of Power House No. I, the energy source for the Rouge complex.

Pretty fabulous, right? If you ever get the chance to visit the DIA, do not miss it! We get there early and leave late. Wear comfortable shoes because there is a lot of walking involved, but no worries, there are plenty of places to sit, eat, drink, etc. Also, hint hint, a great gift shop!
👩💻 Until next time…
