Tuna Salad and a small, wild wonder… 🤎

This is our sweet beast. Some of his antics are hilarious (I’m sure you can relate with a pet of your own) – He gets a special treat every once in a while and it’s his absolute favorite. Afterwards, he gets in between his two beds (he likes them stacked up) and roots. This is the result. Ear flipped, eyebrows going every which way. He is incredibly happy.

We had a light dinner on this evening – I bought some good San Francisco sourdough bread and made tuna salad + coleslaw (it’s a good combo, y’all!). I always rinse the tuna, then empty the can into a bowl and go through it with a fork. Anything weird (dark, or anything other than perfect) goes in the Charlie pile. We call them the “bullet holes” (sometimes it’s what it looks like, not that I would know what a bullet hole looks like, but I do watch TV, so…) Charlie gets the “bullet holes”.

This dog had pancreatitis at a very young age, which means low-fat food, and zero fat in his treats. He can have fruit or veggies (NOTE: NOT all fruits/veggies are safe, so always check before giving your pet something new). His standard is carrots, peeled, and sliced round (small) and sometimes on a diagonal. Also, cut up cucumbers, red cabbage, zucchini, crunchy LETTUCE, small bits of apple, the list goes on and on and on. But every once in a while he gets his final meal of the day with “meatballs” (the rest of his pebbles of dry food) + a “salad” (veggies) + his little bit of bullet hole tuna. Occasionally he’ll get a tablespoon of rice or pasta mixed in, with “gravy” (water) or “white gravy” (0% yogurt/water over rice/pasta). He is VERY excited about his final meal of the day 😂. After this particular dinner he ran off and was rooting in his bed forever and then popped up and looked at me. *Snap* – haha, got it!

What are some of the rituals with your pet? They are such a big part of our lives. Absolutely the best!

Oh! This is a recipe post ;)

TUNA SALAD

  • 1 can tuna (I use Costco Albacore)
  • Mayo (to taste, I use Hellman’s)
  • minced red onion or celery (or both)
  • Pepper
  • dijon mustard (optional)**

I rinse and drain the can of tuna, add it to a bowl and break it up with a fork. Then add a spoonful or two of mayo and the minced red onion/celery/both/neither, pepper and dijon mustard if you’re using (all to taste) start with a teaspoon and increase each time you make it to see what you like best.

**I only add dijon if I’m also using cheddar cheese (as in a tuna melt or grilled tuna sandwich), otherwise I don’t use it. This sandwich is great served with coleslaw!
