Painter and art instructor Robert Henri taught that every detail – even a casual beach hat – should work to express a person’s character. In this portrait of his wife Marjorie on a California beach, the hat tied with a blue scarf brings out her striking green blue eyes – and the intensity of her sunlit gaze.
