Guess the Artist (Detroit Institute of Arts) #16!

Spectacular painting. I adore the colors and the bright gold/yellow of the flower against the background and the leaves. Wow. Dramatic with a capital “D” for sure. I would say moody and dramatic, yet colorful and utter perfection.

Sunflowers, 1932

“Shooting up, blooming, glowing, decaying,” is Emil Nolde’s description of flowers as a metaphor for our lives.

Sunflowers were frequently used to symbolize the cycle of birth and death. Here, Nolde presents them at the moment in late fall when the sunflower heads are ready to drop their seeds to begin the cycle anew.”
