The Fascinating World of Gargoyles vs. Grotesques (Biltmore House)!

Image of small section of Biltmore House, Gargoyle, Grotesque, carving

This stately piece of architecture is a cut above the rest (that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting). Dynamic, regal and historic. The amount of intricate detail is mesmerizing. There are a number of (what we would call) gargoyles – they’re everywhere and they’re all different. They are so creative and wonderful, you need to go visit for that reason alone! I’ve heard there is only one true gargoyle… Do you know the difference between gargoyles and grotesques?

Sometimes a gargoyle looks a bit like a human and sometimes an animal. I thought it was purely a decoration. In actuality, from what I’ve read, a gargoyle is used to divert water away from the walls of the building and project it elsewhere so there is no damage. It seems as if there are many, but I read a Biltmore post that says there is only one. I’m thinking it’s the one bottom right that juts out so far away from the wall of the building. Do you know? Whoever came up with this idea is brilliant!

Do you know what a grotesque is? It’s purely there for your viewing pleasure and does nothing to aid in water drainage, etc. If you notice there are so many grotesques at the Biltmore House. Each is as fabulous as the next. Some shaped like a human and some like an animal. They are so full of character. From a Biltmore FB post: “These stone details were carved on-site by expert stone carvers set up on the Esplanade, or the stretch of lawn in front of Biltmore House. Our curatorial team doesn’t believe they were given much guidance as to what they should look like, but theorize they reference popular culture, and even the faces of other stone carvers.

So, it would be my guess in the image above that the gargoyle that juts out over the side of the building (in such a cool way!) is the gargoyle! The many other carvings of interesting faces and such are there to delight you.
