Whimsy. This painting is packed with it. Joyful colors, people floating, a heart, an arrow about to pierce the heart, random people – what does this all mean? Oh, I just noticed something else that’s very cool! But try to guess the artist first. Answer is below. #giveitatry

Guess the Artist (Detroit Institute of Arts) #10!

I find the slight tilt of the head interesting. Almost like he’s listening to someone tell an interesting story. This guy is a listener – it’s in the body language! Fabulous painting, love the bold brush strokes and dark background – it adds the the air of mystery. Is he dressed and at a formal event, or is he undercover on a mission seeking the truth, is this a self-portrait or did a woman paint this painting? Questions. I love paintings that produce questions and keep the mind wandering.

Can you guess who this week’s artist is? Answer below…

Guess the Artist (Detroit Institute of Arts) #9!

So. Much. Emotion. So much movement – the tumultuous clouds. A shipwreck… the surprise, horror, devastation, worry and possible thanks they must feel. The bit of blue sky in the distance, the roar of the sea, the building that stands tall and offers hope in an awful situation. It’s almost as if the artist had set up to paint en plein air and had witnessed (and painted) a shipwreck as it was unfolding. *See note below!

Guess the Artist (Detroit Institute of Arts) #8!

Can you guess the artist?

This painting took my breath away. To see it in person is entirely different than on a computer screen. The clearness, the feeling, their faces, the light coming through the cloth, the flowers on the floor, the drama, the pain all so palpable. I went back to this painting a few times and was blown away each time. So many stunning paintings, I would not have thought this to be a favorite, but it was hard to walk away from. I wanted to know more…

Easy, right? #ha… if you’re one who thinks painting abstracts is easy, I urge you to give it a try. Working part time in a few galleries in the past, some people who enter the gallery laugh and say “What is that supposed to be” or “I could do that”! Really? Hmmm, because I’ve tried it and let me tell you, it takes a lot of concentration to not end up with a muddy mess. I think colors are super important (or in this artist’s case, simple black and white!) – but so is the movement and the overall feel. We’re all different and like different things. I would hear “I love that painting”, and “I hate that painting, what were they thinking?” in the span of about 12 seconds. Paintings that you think will sell quickly may be the ones that stick around the longest. There is no predicting. It’s all because we’re unique individuals and we like what we like, but – some artists are able to grab the attention of more people.

A fascinating work of art. Look at the various expressions. Concern (or could it be hope?), interest, compassion and a deep thought process for one. Or is it something else entirely? I think you’ll be surprised (I was!)… The stories that could be told are numerous. This painting is made even more mysterious with the black background. To see these paintings in person at the Detroit Institute of Arts was a dream and I cannot wait to go back! Take a minute to see if you can guess the artist – answer is below…

Guess the Artist #3 | Detroit Institute of Arts

Can you guess today’s artist? (Answer below) – Just look at these expressions, one of concentration and the young boy, what is his expression? I’m not finding information on what this painting is about? Does anyone have insight? The color palette is stunning – the young boy captures my attention and holds my eyes until I can almost not let go. Mesmerizing.

Solved: Fish Beach painting by Tim Bell

Guess the artist!

Fish Beach painting by Tim Bell  8×10″  Oil

SOLVED! Thank you to all who participated!! 🏆

This painting is by Tim Bell – a painting standing from fish beach looking towards the road. Tim has a way of capturing a scene. Love those little bits of green, it’s amazing how such a small touch can make a painting come alive!

This past year was foggy several days on the island when we were there. It was wonderful and looked just like this. Good memories!

Over the next few months (until I run out of paintings), I am posting one of our paintings and then seeing who can GUESS THE ARTIST. I have retouched this photo on the bottom left corner to remove the artist’s signature.
