I know I’ve featured James Richards a few times already, but his work never ceases to amaze me. Oh how I adore Lost in the Marsh! It’s an impressive 36×48″ oil painting that has the perfect amount of looseness, and I just think it’s incredible! James has the uncanny ability to be able to paint an everyday scene with a twist, and I love that!
James Richards is one of the most sought after landscape instructors around, his workshops fill up quickly and there is good reason for that. He’s as nice as he is talented. Truly. If you get a chance to check out his work in person, I highly suggest it. Locally, in Charleston, SC you can see his work at Galerie on Broad*. He’s got some amazing pieces… come see for yourself!

This painting stops people in their tracks. It’s mesmerizing. No, cows aren’t normally purple, but they sure are pretty darn cool when they are! Very striking indeed!

Summer Fun by James Richards
Today is the first day of summer (which is the summer solstice… the longest day of the year). You will see light a wee bit longer today.
Speaking of light… James Richards, an awesome plein air painter who’s style I adore has been turning out some incredible beach scenes. They are loose and leave something to your imagination which is part of the beauty of his work. Can’t you just feel the sun beating down upon you in this painting? Hear the ocean and the buzz of excitement from the people? Feel a bit relaxed after looking at this? I can even feel the water lapping at my ankles as the tide goes in and out… I love how Jim’s work allows you to use your imagination in the people’s faces. Charleston Shadows by James Richards
My husband and I met Jim at an art walk at Galerie on Broad in Charleston, SC. Jim was giving a demo that just blew us away. Every piece of his work was fabulous. If you’re in the Charleston area I highly encourage you to check it out. STUNNING. Charleston work that isn’t typical. He’s got a nice edge that makes it different and fresh. I’m going to let you in on a little secret… Jim is giving a Plein Air Workshop in France August 4 – 18, 2013… there are only a few spots left. You must read about it! Talk about a breathtaking experience! Other than airfare, it’s all inclusive, meaning food, lodging, wine, travel once you get there from painting location to location is all covered in the price! I love the paintings by James Richards. Rarely do I have a problem selecting which painting to use in a post, but these are all so good! Charleston paintings with a different twist which I adore! This evening there is an art walk downtown (Charleston, SC), and James will have a show of his paintings at the Galerie on Broad (located on Broad Street) and (lucky us!) he will be doing a painting demo. Gloucester Harbor by James Richards
James Richards has some downright jaw dropping paintings on his website and on his Facebook page. Isn’t Gloucester Harbor absolutely incredible? The looseness of the strokes is out of this world. The colors are out of this world. His ability to get rid of all the unimportant “stuff” in the actual landscape amazes me. He left what was interesting and downright GORGEOUS! It wasn’t easy to choose only one painting, each and every one is so good! I love when an artist posts photos of what they’re painting. It makes them (the artist) kind of like a magician to me. It’s magical how they portray what they see so differently and so much better than it is!
Here is the photo of what James painted (from his Facebook page) – Now do you see what I mean?! Jaw dropping, right? Look how he gave the painting some twists and turns and not boring straight lines everywhere… no little stuff all over the place, oh heavy sigh, I can tell you mine would be quite different… it would be straight lines and all the little stuff, yuck yuck yuck. Why don’t you paint like the paintings you like I wonder? Well, I guess it all starts with picking up a brush… (I hear ya Ken! hee):

Every time I go out to paint, I’m amazed at the beauty,
complexity, and originality of God’s creation. Every
day is unique and offers different challenges and
opportunities for the artist. Being true to these
differences, accurately mixing the appropriate color,
value, and relationship I see before me achieves a
result of a certain realness in the painting.
In painting, light is always the main theme of my work.
Light gives form, color, and atmosphere to everything
we see. Without it, we would see nothing.
Thus, as it is in the natural world, so it is in our
spiritual world. Light gives meaning, reason, and
purpose to our existence. In nature, the source of
light is the sun. In our spirit, the source of light is
God’s Son, Jesus Christ.
My entire life has been a search for truth. Until I
learned of Jesus and asked him into my life, I existed
in the darkness of my own interpretation of life. As
Jesus filled me with his spirit, he has filled my life with
the light of God and an understanding of truth.
With this talent God has given me, He has also given
me vision. A vision to see the glory of God in His
creation. This is why I paint.
