Appalachian Winter by William Jameson | 36″ x 36″ | Oil on Panel
Isn’t this painting fabulous? It captures a scene in North Carolina so perfectly. The stream leads your eye to the fabulous trees in the distance which then goes on to that little spot of orange brilliance behind the tree towards the top and on to the dark limbs of the evergreen trees. This painting is so lovely you just don’t want to look away.

I love the simplicity of this piece. There is a serenity to this despite the storm that’s about to break… very nice. The dark tree mass makes all the other colors stand out nicely.
Simplicity by Sherry Russ Levine
I love Sherri’s roses. Absolutely beautiful. Her still life work is amazing, and you just might be in luck! If you’re in the Nashville, TN area this weekend… there are just a few spots remaining in her weekend workshop “TWO DAY STILL LIFE WORKSHOP”! I would act quickly if you’re interested!
Two Day Still Life Workshop
Event Dates: 3/8/2014 – 3/9/2014
Loosen up and learn to paint expressively with a limited palette, big brushes and a palette knife! Sherrie will give a brief orientation & demo of the principles of painting in the “Alla Prima” method from life while explaining her planning process of composition, values, edges and color harmony.Later students will paint their first response to simplified shapes with confident brush strokes. The goal of this workshop is to understand the solid foundation of a painting and take your work to the next level!
Sherrie Russ Levine was born in Georgetown, South Carolina and attended Ringling School of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida where she received her degree in graphic design and illustration. After graduating she worked in advertising agencies and corporate art departments in Atlanta, Georgia for 10 years before making Nashville, Tennessee her home. Since 1995 she has focused her energy on paintings in oil and has shown in galleries and juried shows throughout the United States.
Levine is an artist noted for her loose impressionist paintings filled with evocative light and color. Her works capture the mood or atmosphere of any subject with expressive brushwork and just enough details to invite you to take a closer look. She often travels to find new inspiration and paints en plein air when on location, or always from life in the studio.
Levine’s paintings are gaining national recognition in private collections and painting competitions. Her painting “Capitalizing on Sunshine” has become a part of the Tennessee State Museum’s Permanent Collection. She has continued her studies of painting under the tutelage of renowned artists Barbara Flowers, CW Mundy, Kim English, Lori Putnam and Scott Christensen whom are among the most influential in her work.
Kim has a fabulous loose style. I love the bits of white canvas peeking through… there is a lot going on in this painting, yet it’s fresh and not at all tight. I’m not usually a fan of beach paintings, but this one is nice. Lots going on… love the life guard stand, and those fabulous palms. Great painting!
Read a blip about Kim from her website, (read more by clicking HERE):
“It is my hope that when you view my painting from across the room you can easily see what the subject is, then, upon closer inspection, you find yourself lost in the brushwork.”
After graduating with a fine arts degree in illustration from the California College of the Arts in Oakland California Kim worked as a graphic designer for 11 years. She left the design field to begin a new venture, motherhood. Needing a creative outlet after her son was born Kim began painting. Today she paints in the studio as well as en plein air (painting outdoors).
She began painting en plein air because it combined her love of being outside and creating art. “I enjoy the challenges plein air painting poses. Dealing with the weather, changing light and the other hurdles of outdoor painting has forced me to learn to make decisions quickly, to paint with commitment and above all, to have a plan for each painting.” Kim feels that her plein air work has, in turn, strengthened her studio paintings.
