St. Simons Retreat – An Exclusive Design for Southern Living by Ken Tate Architect
Of all the house plans we’ve looked at (and have tucked safely in a big bag in the closet), this is one of our favorites. It’s a nice coastal design, great near water or marsh… To me, it resembles those neat older beach cottages like we see on Sullivan’s Island… so very cool. So Charleston. What I especially love is the openness of this plan… I like that the master is downstairs and guests are upstairs, affording them their privacy.
This is the St. Simons Retreat house plan by Ken Tate for Southern Living. This plan is 1,798 square feet with 2-4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. I would keep it at two bedrooms and keep the treasured storage space upstairs!
Many thanks to Fred for remembering the name of this house… and for all his input! It’s been a while since we’ve talked about house plans, he reminded me of the things we wanted to change… We would move that little half bath that is near the kitchen to underneath the stairway. It would be teeny, with a cute little sink and of course a toilet… but we would expand the kitchen taking up the utility space… we would then finagle a way to scoot the utility space into the alcove/closet area off the master bath. I don’t need an alcove, or a bathtub, so that might make way for a stackable washer/dryer? You know, just scootch the walls over a wee bit… Might also add a porch on the back of the house (which is what you would see as you pulled into the driveway IF this was situated on water or marsh). Note the elegant wide hallway. Oh, can you imagine using vintage pine flooring? Pure beauty!
I love the upstairs… it has just the right amount of space. One nice size bedroom and STORAGE… yep, can you believe that? The one thing lacking in so many homes… storage! I cannot imagine! This is the house we would build if we were building right now… I think. What fun we’ve had coming up with ways to alter the plan to work for us!
Catch you back here tomorrow!
Now, I could live in this beauty all year round!
