TIS THE SEASON! It’s officially SMOOTHIE weather! When it turns hot and humid, relief is needed. This fabulous smoothie tastes great and cools you off quickly. After we walk, we usually come in and make a smoothie. This is my all time favorite, and when Fred is home he makes one each morning (in the summer). Here’s what he does… See updated (2025) version below…
BANANA SMOOTHIES – The Latest Version (2025)
2 servings… halve for one serving…
- 2 bananas (peeled and tossed in a ziplock into freezer the night before)
- vanilla almond milk (UNSWEET) (Silk brand or Almond Breeze)
- Stonyfield vanilla lowfat or Stonyfield Vanilla Full Fat (big spoonful or two)
- fresh spinach (handful or two)
- nutmeg or real cinnamon
That’s it! The two main ingredients are bananas and unsweetened vanilla almond milk… Spinach and/or yogurt is optional (but it adds a little protein)!
I just break up the banana into the blender, add almond milk to not quite cover (you can always add more, so don’t add too much), if using, add the yogurt, spinach and a spice if you like (not necessary though!). Turn on the blender until well blended. If it’s not moving add a little more almond milk. If it’s too runny, boo… try adding some ice cubes :)
Back to original post…
We use almond milk, vanilla flavored and UN-sweet… Trader Joe’s is an excellent one to try! (But lately I’ve been using Silk Almond Milk or Almond Breeze (vanilla UNSWEET). It can be hard to find vanilla and unsweetened… also nutmeg (optional), and some frozen bananas.
Tip: When you buy bananas and they get speckled and past their prime for eating, peel them, toss them into a plastic bag and put them in the freezer. That way you won’t need ice, which can water down the smoothie. BUT, if you don’t have frozen bananas on hand, use regular ones, and throw some ice in… then drink fast ;) Sometimes I can find ripe bananas (we bought them the other day for $ 0.29/lb) much cheaper so if I see them, I’ll buy them and then freeze them as soon as I get home!

Add 2 frozen bananas to your blender. A sweet neighbor gave us a Vitamix years and years ago, we use it nearly every day. If you’ve ever considered one, they are so worth it!
Now add about 2 cups (give or take) of almond milk. (Note: You can also use soy milk… it’s poison to me so I can’t drink it, but long ago I used to use vanilla soy. Almond milk is much better).
Turn that puppy on and watch magic happen right before your very eyes!
Oh, you’re so close… pour into glasses… Hurry!!
Add a sprinkle of nutmeg… Personally, I think this makes it super special… I like to blend it in, but you-know-who isn’t big on nutmeg… So I stir it around with my straw…
The other day, Fred and I stopped at EarthFare (healthy grocery store near us) and bought a Top of the Morning muffin to share… then headed home to make a wonderful banana smoothie. The muffin was delicious, but the absolute best part of this breakfast was the smoothie. You are about to start your day the healthy way…
***Updates: for more protein that’s a quick and easy thing to do!
While there are endless variations of smoothies, this one is best kept simple… let me know what you think! I’m betting it will quickly become a favorite!
Catch you back here tomorrow!

I’ll try it!
