A Restaurant To Check Out in Charleston, SC!

There is a wonderful restaurant in Johns Island, South Carolina (Charleston outskirts) that needs to be applauded for their extremely good salad (and oh, their salmon is out of this world and I’m not a big salmon eater!) – it’s a small place (good to make a reservation) with excellent food. It’s consistently good, which is so important!

I like the brown paper on the tables, the use of mason jars for tea, the small vases of pretty flowers on the tables and the option to sit outside (we haven’t) which is great when it gets really busy. We are hooked on the cob salad (especially in this heat!). It is utter perfection. Their greens are gorgeous, the chicken breast is perfectly cooked, hard boiled egg, thinly sliced cucumbers, tomato, sliced avocado, crispy bacon, sharp cheddar and the pièce de résistance, the pickled red onion which takes this salad over the top. There isn’t too much of anything (smaller portions, to me, are so much better than super large). This salad held us while we ran errands and were gone hours and hours. We didn’t think about food even once. Their (unsweet) iced tea is exquisite too, not sure what brand, but it’s lovely and thirst quenching!

The name of the restaurant is ANGEL OAK (link), and it is located at 3669 Savannah Hwy, Johns Island, SC 29455 (I always thought this was Charleston, but it’s a ways out – worth every second of the drive for sure!)

Angel Oak is run by a nice couple from New York – Our Story (below) is from their website, check out their menus (is there anything better??) HERE.

Our Story

“Jay and Nicole Kees moved from New York to open Angel Oak Restaurant in the summer of 2012.

Nicole was born and raised in the Hudson Valley region. She has worked at many local notable restaurants while obtaining her Master’s degree in Art Education. Prior to opening Angel Oak Restaurant, she taught art education at an inner city school in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Jay was born and raised in southern Mississippi and started working in local restaurants at a young age. He decided to further his career in the food industry which guided him to New York. Jay obtained his Bachelor’s Degree at the Culinary Institute of America.

While in New York, Jay and Nicole met working together at a banquet facility. Immediately they knew that this was the start of something amazing for their futures. While exploring the east coast for a happy balance of North and South, for a career and lifestyle change, they fell in love with the Charleston area. Like Jay and Nicole’s journey together, Angel Oak Restaurant exemplifies the honest rusticity of southern fare.

Enjoy!
