The day I wrote this post was a snow day (woot! woot!) and the grocery store was out of the hot cocoa mix that we like which prompted an investigation. Good grief, I’ve come to find I’ve been paying for the tin! It’s inexpensive to make, comes together quickly and is every bit as tasty as the other brands. TWO ingredients and an optional two more… Whip this together in a few minutes and have it ready to make a nice mug of hot chocolate in the time it takes to heat the milk! FYI, as cold as it was last week, it’s near 70 and sunny today. Crazy🤪! ❄️☀️
I’ve made hot chocolate from scratch many times in the past. Problem is, it was far too thick and seemed wasteful. Also, it never fully stirred into the hot milk. So I came up with my own, which we just tested and are blown away by. The simplicity cannot be denied. This stuff is over the top good.
HOMEMADE HOT CHOCOLATE MIX
- 1/4 cup Hershey’s Cocoa
- 1/2 cup extra-fine sugar (like this one)
- Teaspoon of extra dark chocolate chips – OPTIONAL!
Using a fine mesh sieve (like this one), using the back of a spoon, push the cocoa and fine sugar through the sieve and into a bowl or container that seals (ideally glass). Whisk until completely blended together. (Whisk carefully you don’t want it to go all over)…
Heat a mugful of milk until hot using the microwave or stove. To the hot milk add a tablespoon of hot chocolate mix (more or less to taste!), stir well. You can always add in a few dark chocolate chips (good quality) for an extra chocolatey flavor. Add more or less mix as desired. You can also add a few grains of Diamond Crystal salt, but it is in no way necessary. Whipped cream on top if you like.
It’s just two of us here, so we don’t go through it quickly. But if your family does, feel free to double the recipe, etc. – Just be sure it’s whisked together nicely. I would be sure to use the sieve so you can be sure it stirs into the hot milk easily. Enjoy!!
☕️ Until next time!

So good!
