Another great book by Kristin Hannah! I’m trying not to read all of her books at once, although it’s quite hard not to. I’ve got it down to every other book, but will have to move that to every third book. I just don’t want to be without one of her books! What an escape reading is!
If you’re a reader it’s quite likely you love a good book suggestion. I have hundreds of books marked to read, on my to-be-read (TBR) list. For those of you who are using a spreadsheet or paper lists, I highly recommend GOODREADS.COM – it’s a great site for many reasons. You can look up a book, read about the book as well as read the reviews. You can follow an author and be notified when they have a book coming out soon (and can even enter to win an Advanced Reader Copy), you can write reviews if you like, and most important, you can mark books “WANT TO READ” (I currently have 712 books marked!). When you start to read the book mark it as “CURRENTLY READING”, and when you’re done, click the “I’VE FINISHED THIS BOOK” or choose “READ” meaning you’ve read it. You can look at past lists of read/TBR at any time which is handy when you’re in a bookstore or library. This (free) app has saved me from buying a book I’ve already read several times.
Summer Island – tis the season (at least in SC) beach season is near (or sitting by the pool, on the porch, or in your house) and although this isn’t technically a “beach read” it’s an escape that is fabulous.
Read a blip about this book from Kristin Hannah’s website:
Summer Island
Description
The author of the cherished bestseller On Mystic Lake returns with a poignant, funny, luminous novel about a mother and daughter–the complex ties that bind them, the past that separates them, and the healing that comes with forgiveness.
Years ago, Nora Bridge walked out on her marriage and left her daughters behind. She has since become a famous radio talk-show host and newspaper columnist beloved for her moral advice. Her youngest daughter, Ruby, is a struggling comedienne who uses her famous mother as fuel for her bitter, cynical humor. When the tabloids unearth a scandalous secret from Nora’s past, their estrangement suddenly becomes dramatic: Nora is injured in an accident and a glossy magazine offers Ruby a fortune to write a tell-all about her mother. Under false pretenses, Ruby returns home to take care of the woman she hasn’t spoken to for almost a decade.
Nora insists they retreat to Summer Island in the San Juans, to the lovely old house on the water where Ruby grew up, a place filled with childhood memories of love and joy and belonging. There Ruby is also reunited with her first love and his brother. Once, the three of them had been best friends, inseparable. Until the summer that Nora had left and everyone’s hearts had been broken. . . .
What began as an expose evolves, as Ruby writes, into an exploration of her family’s past. Nora is not the woman Ruby has hated all these years. Witty, wise, and vulnerable, she is desperate to reconcile with her daughter. As the magazine deadline draws near and Ruby finishes what has begun to seem to her an act of brutal betrayal, she is forced to grow up and at last to look at her mother–and herself–through the eyes of a woman. And she must, finally, allow herself to love.
Summer Island is a beautiful novel, funny, tender, sad, and ultimately triumphant.
My review on Goodreads (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️):
Summer Island by Kristin Hannah – Whoa! Great characters, great plot, the ending…!!!!!! Deep subjects handled only the way Kristin Hannah can. Poetic justice seems to be a big part of this book, which brings to the forefront the fact that we’re all human. You will feel such a mix of emotions throughout this book – What an ending!
My very favorite part of this book is the paragraph right before the epilogue. Pure magic.
Be still my heart, I read it, reread it and tears popped out. Wow. Absolute brilliance and such a lovely thought. If you haven’t read Summer Island yet, it’s a great one to add to your TBR list!
As always, let me know if you have a good book suggestion!!
📚 Until next time…
