I took an evening walk and guess who was in the tree having a big time. The squirrel. They’re everywhere and I know some people aren’t big on them because they can be destructive but to watch them, they always seem so happy. Jumping around, and from tree to tree it almost appears they can fly at times. See the tree branch the squirrel is on? Note the crunchy vegetation…
Well, it’s official, we’re in a severe drought, we need rain, rain, rain – but there is none in sight. Everything is getting a tad crunchy. BUT, the crunchy vegetation on the tree is supposed to look like that. It’s called a Resurrection Fern. As soon as we get rain, it will turn green and look like the healthiest fern you’ve ever seen. It makes a dramatic switch from crunchy to stunning, and then a few days with no rain it’s back to this again. It’s quite miraculous if you ask me!
This remarkable plant can lose about 75 percent of its water content during a typical dry period and possibly up to 97 percent in an extreme drought. During this time, it shrivels up to a grayish brown clump of leaves. When it is exposed to water again, it will “come back to life” and look green and healthy. The plant gets its name from this supposed “resurrection,” but it never actually dies during the process. By contrast, most other plants can lose only 10 percent of their water content before they die. Fronds are typically 4 to 12 inches (10 to 30 centimeters) in length.
