American Classic by Christina Body

What is it about paintings of an Airstream? The neat reflections that bounce off it? The happy memories they might bring back? Whatever it is, it seems that everyone is enchanted by an Airstream painting… This is a nice one by Christina Body… love the flamingos!

I think it is so interesting when artists show what they’re painting along with the actual painting. It’s neat to see what they see and how they can transform the canvas and make it so much more interesting than real life! See what I mean?

ChristinaBody painting-a-silver-twinkie cb

Christina Body calls this “Painting a Silver Twinkie” – sense of humor, I like it!

This painting has already sold, but I just had to show you! Christina paints a wide variety of subjects. If you aren’t familiar with her work, check it out!

Read a blip about Christina from her website:

“There is nothing more exciting in my life than ‘seeing’ something to paint” – stopping dead in my tracks and saying “I’ve got to paint that!  City life, boats in a harbor or my son in my arms my heart pounds with inspiration and excitement from the onset of the idea until the final stroke on canvas. I paint what I know, what I love and new people and places that strike my heart… “

Christina has been making art since childhood. Strongly influenced by her Great Uncle and First Uncle she became familiar and comfortable with many forms of art. Charcoal and Sumi ink drawings, watercolor, acrylic and oil painting, woodcarving and sculpture. She experienced first hand the passion to make art and the excitement in experimenting in multi-medias. It was the beginning of how she would forever see the world.

Christina’s formal training began with an art scholarship under the mentorship of professor emeritus Robert Paulson at Southern Illinois University. It was in Carbondale, IL that she had her first plein air (outdoor) painting classes. It was Robert Paulson that taught his students how to capture fleeting light, compare values and temperature, and see the big shapes. And uniquely he also inspired his students to not always paint exactly what you see but to paint how you feel about your subject and environment.

After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in painting and minors in Photography and Theatre from SIU she continued her studies at the American Academy of Art and the acclaimed Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago and under the tutelage of renowned artists David Leffell, Ken Auster and Henry Yan. Inspiration also came from her extended stays plein air painting in Key West, Jamaica and travels abroad. Christina’s inspirations consist of notable artists Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, and the early twentieth century artists of the Ashcan School. She paints in oils both ‘en plein air’ and in her studio from models, sketches, oil studies and photographs.

“My passion to make paintings has only grown stronger after having my children. The love I feel mothering my children and making a painting are parallel; I can’t see myself any other way. I feel an urgency to paint and a directness that I didn’t feel before I had my kids. My time is precious as well as my aspirations. When I paint I wear my ‘mental suit’ armed with confidence, clarity, excitement and spirituality. When I connect with my subject everything else around me becomes a blur. Raising and caring for my children has enlightened me and the way I see and opens up new doors everyday. Children and painting together is a stream of rewarding moments. I am truly grateful.”

Christina’s award winning paintings have earned her participation in juried shows and national plein air painting competitions and invitational’s, including ‘2008 Plein Air Festival, Door County, WI and ‘2007 Plein Air Easton’, in Easton, Maryland. Most recent awards include “Best of Show” at the 65th Annual Salon Show, at Bachman Gallery, in Munster, IN and two “Honorable Mentions” at the Cedarburg Plein Air Painting Festival, in Cedarburg WI. In May 2008 Body’s solo exhibition “Chicago in a Blink” at The Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts was reviewed by Chicago Art Critic Alan Artner in the Chicago Tribune – a first for The Palette and Chisel Academy in 100 years. Her work has been published in American Art magazine and is included in Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s corporate art collection in Chicago.

Christina is a founding member of the Plein Air Painters of Chicago, a member of Oil Painters of America, International Plein Air Painters and an Artist Member of The Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, in Chicago. She exhibits her work in galleries and juried exhibitions nationally and her paintings hang in corporate, public and private collections worldwide. Christina resides in Chicago with her husband Jake and sons Emil and Walter.

I enjoy interiors. Everyone that I speak to loves them, yet you don’t see a lot of them… Sam Robinson has a fabulous website, you can view paintings by subject, Figures, Interiors, Landscapes and (tada!) Interiors! He does a wonderful job with each subject. This interior is such a sweet painting, the nice warm colors, view of the outdoors, light on the wall from the lamp and the shadows that it provides… very cool! Sam also does portraits and equestrian sporting art (foxhunting and steeplechase). Check out his website if you get a chance!

Below is a painting that was done for a show at McBride Gallery… the light in this painting is incredible!

Pemaquid Sundown by Sam Robinson – Image: SamRobinsonFineArt.com

Here’s a blip about Sam from his website:

My credo as an artist is, “Expression without Description”. I work directly from life as often as is practical. I prize the vivid suggestion of appearances through brushwork and color tones. My artistic concerns can be understood as a pursuit of a “New American Impressionism”. It is the effect or impression I am after, stated directly from observation. I aim for painterly warmth and pursue my taste for subjects and effects that have charm and beauty.

Equestrian Sporting Art is a particular passion, deeply connected to the landscape and country life of the surrounding region. Several of my shows on the subject have shared the title, “Portrait of a Tradition”, summing up my intention to capture the particular character of the landscape and the subjects; human, equine and canine that inhabit it.

I lived in South Korea for most of my childhood where my parents served as missionaries. My earliest art training was in Asian brush painting. On my return to the United States I studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, graduating magna cum laude with a BFA in painting in 1978. I live in Maryland with my wife and two children.

I am a member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association and participate in their paint-outs and shows. I am also a member of the Portrait Society of America and have received the “Best Portfolio” award twice, a Certificate of Merit in the International Portrait Competition, and an Honorable Mention in the members only Self-Portrait Competition. I have also received Honorable Mentions in plein air event “Quick Draw” competitions at Paint Annapolis and Plein Air Easton.

Summer Fun by James Richards

Today is the first day of summer (which is the summer solstice… the longest day of the year).  You will see light a wee bit longer today.

Speaking of light… James Richards, an awesome plein air painter who’s style I adore has been turning out some incredible beach scenes. They are loose and leave something to your imagination which is part of the beauty of his work. Can’t you just feel the sun beating down upon you in this painting? Hear the ocean and the buzz of excitement from the people? Feel a bit relaxed after looking at this? I can even feel the water lapping at my ankles as the tide goes in and out… I love how Jim’s work allows you to use your imagination in the people’s faces. I think it’s amazing how he has the ability to do that. (Image above from JRichardsStudio.com)

Maroon Street Poppies by Chad Smith

Oh, I am loving these pops of orange against the green… fabulous! I ran across Chad’s work on Facebook and was loving every single piece… I was having a horrific time trying to find one image that I really loved on his website because each and every one is just so wonderful! On Chad’s website, when you click on  PORTFOLIO you’ll have some options. Maroon Street Poppies is located under FIELD WORK TEST. If I ever complete a painting that is close to being as fabulous as this is you will hear me yodel from a mountaintop somewhere. Ha ha… not kidding! I love light in a painting and this is just so perfect… Check out his work, I’m sure you will love it as much as I do!

I really like it when artists share who they’ve studied with. Kenn Backhaus and Marc Hanson… whoa! I love their work! They’ve both “got the eye”… and they can transform a canvas into what they see which is breathtaking and ALWAYS a treat! Oh, and you can’t forget about Mother Nature…! Painting plein air is challenging to say the least. You have got to be organized and pretty quick at what you do… no time to dilly dally when the sun moves at such a fast pace (which you would never realize unless you’re trying to paint and the shadow that was once there is now quickly gone)!

Here’s a blip about Chad from his website:

Chad Smith’s (b.1970) most influential instruction came through private full-time atelier study with Douglas Flynt via Jacob Collins and the Water Street Atelier. Smith has studied plein air and studio landscape painting with Kenn Backhaus and Marc Hanson. Smith previously studied classical academic drawing and painting concepts with Frank Covino, Don Maitz and David Meo. Smith has also studied figure and animal drawing with famed Disney animator and teacher Glenn Vilppu and Joe Weatherly. He graduated with a BA in Drawing and Painting from the State University of New York and is presently finishing graduate MFA work at the Academy of Art University.

In addition to gallery work, commissioned studio work, and plein air events, Smith now spends his time with the greatest teacher of all outdoors painting from life “en plein air.”

Laundry Day by Eric Bowman

How often do you see a painting that makes you FEEL something? This painting Laundry Day stands out to me in so many ways… the woman in the pink shirt looks so hot and exhausted… you can feel the heat from that iron. I just want to walk up to her, offer her a cold glass of water and tell her to have a seat… “and I’ll finish the ironing for you”! The light, the dark shadows on the wall, whoa… Eric is one talented artist, and from what I’ve heard through the grapevine… the nicest guy ever. I look forward to seeing his work in person one day!

To The Pond by Andre Lucero

I really enjoy Andre’s work. I love the spectacular light and the fabulous tree. The shadows and footprints in the snow are very cool reflecting the warm light of the day. Very nice! It looks like the first day of Spring (2013), ha ha…

Read a blip about Andre from the J.M. Stringer Gallery of Fine Art:

Painting is my passion. I was trained in a more traditional academic setting, but in recent years I have combined my love for the outdoors with my art. It is most exciting attempting to capture on the spot the way the light falls on a beautiful scene or a fleeting aspect of nature. I complete more than 100 plein air paintings a year. I am most at peace painting before nature, outdoors.”

Born in Tehran, Iran in 1967, Andre’s U.S. Military family returned to the states soon after his birth, settling in a Washington D.C. suburb. Early on, Andre’s artistic nature was encouraged by his parents who were both patrons of the arts. He showed early promise, and in high school Andre’s artwork was recognized by the Scholastic Art Awards, which resulted in his work being displayed two consecutive years at D.C.’s Corcoran Museum of Art. In college, Andre continued his study of art, ultimately taking his background in fine art and applying it to the study of illustration at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was awarded the first Annual Mallory Callan Memorial Scholarship for Illustration. In each of his college years, Andre’s work was prominently displayed in juried shows and began to sell.

After earning a BFA, cum laude, in 1989, Andre worked for more than a decade as a free-lance illustrator. During that time, his illustrations appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, Playboy, U.S. News & World Report, The Washington Times, Arthritis Today, Business Law Today, and Government Executive. While his illustration work was honored with the 1995 Virginia Press Association Best of Show Award and the 1994 Award of Excellence from the Art Directors’ Club of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Andre decided to leave the field of illustration and devote his full attention to his first love, painting. Andre Lucero lives and maintains a studio in Richmond, Virginia.

Andre is an associate member of the Oil Painters of America and a member of Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, and The Jack Woodson Sketch Club (plein air painting group, Richmond, Virginia).

“Kiawah Pathway” by Morgan Samuel Price

Nice painting… Kiawah Pathway… and it looks just like that tropical location. Lots of palms, big trees and lots and lots of green. Nice light, and the moss in the trees… very good, just a hint to let you know what it is! Seems like it would be easy to whip this painting out… but when your subject has so much of the same color going on, you have to know what you’re doing. I would say Morgan has figured it out quite nicely, wouldn’t you? I’m glad she found her passion early!

Here’s a blip about Morgan from her website

Art has always been an investment on numerous levels. Focused on astute observations requires all my resources.

My reason for painting; I am passionate about the process. I enjoy the challenge. The intrigue of the pursuit of a painting that conveys my enjoyment of the light in nature is gleaned from my experience while observing what piqued my attention.  The love of beauty is the joy of my life as an artist. I am never bored. Capturing the allure, in the simplest things or an expansive view is why I stay a student of observation, to discern those fleeting moments.

Many years ago, a most gifted artist, Loran Wilford, said to me, “You will become your own teacher”.  This simple yet prophetic statement became a fact in my career. I feel very fortunate that early in my life I realized this study would keep me focused as I pursued this multifaceted demanding passion. Being receptive is an asset. Lucky me, I found my passion early.

I’ll say! Lucky indeed! Catch you back here tomorrow!

“Study for Sunlit Pines” by Paula Holtzclaw

I first saw Paula’s paintings on Plein Air Painters of the Southeast’s Facebook page. Ahhh, the talent!

When I see that artists have their paintings categorized on their websites I always go to the plein air group first. Those are the paintings that are typically the loosest and most representative of what the artists see’s when they’re painting. I went straight to this study of the sunlit pines (NFS). It’s a beauty isn’t it? I love those trees, the clouds, the shadow and sun… gorgeous!

“For Miles and Miles” by Paula Holtzclaw

What a great name for this one! “For Miles and Miles”, I mean it feels like you’re sitting right there on that rock, looking out over the sea for miles and miles, while the sun hits your face… ahhh, this painting gives you a nice feeling, doesn’t it?

Here’s a blip about Paula from her website:

Far horizons and infinite skies are the hallmark of Paula Holtzclaw’s art.  Paula is best known for her landscapes celebrating areas still untouched by industrialism.  Her depictions of its beauty, unspoiled by man show her concern that these last wild places may soon vanish.  Her compositions, often large in scale, have a classic and universal appeal.
Paula’s love of art began at an early age, passed on to her, she believes, by her grandmothers, both of whom were artists.  After time spent raising her twin sons, she returned to her original passion for painting.  In 2002, Paula left her 20+ year medical career to paint full time.  Always a willing and eager student, she remains committed to honing her artistic skills.  “Travel has been an important impetus for my art, always stimulating my desire for plein air painting, and quick studies which provide the opportunity to learn from nature itself, the greatest of all teachers.  I have been fortunate to study under such fine mentors as Joni Falk, Linda Glover Gooch and Scott Christensen and Jeff Legg.”
Paula Holtzclaw’s paintings are collected throughout the nation.  Her paintings have been displayed in many national juried and museum exhibitions, a few of which are the American Impressionist Society, Salon International, Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art, The Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists National Exhibitions,  Bosque Conservatory, Texas , and  ASMA ‘s New England and West Coast  Exhibitions.  Paula was a finalist in American Artist Magazine’s 29th annual competition 2012, and their 2010 and 2009 Cover Competitions.  She was a semi-finalist in their 70th Anniversary Competition, 2007. She has just been selected as one ofSouthwest Art’s “21 over 31” Artists, (November 2010) and also by Southwest Art Magazine as one to collect, July 2009.  A member of Pap-se (Plein Air Painters of the SouthEast), Paula is also a Signature Member of: American Women Artists, The American Society of Marine Artists, Women Artists of the West, and  The National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society.  She is  Associate Member of  California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, and American Impressionist Society.
Paula resides in Waxhaw, N.C., a small community just south of Charlotte, (where the horses outnumber the people),  with her husband Chuck, and  constant companion Timber, her “Velcro” Golden Retriever.

I first saw this image on Facebook. Ahhh, Facebook, gotta love it. It’s the most awesome tool when looking for the latest and greatest art. I love how artists are posting their work, its fascinating!

This is amazing on so many levels. I have always admired Randy’s work. I featured Randy back in September 2012, but couldn’t resist another post… this painting is so full of life. No harsh edges, just strokes of genius smattered here and there and TADA… a painting so fabulous that it takes your breath away! There is so much going on, yet not too much detail. The colors and strokes… INTERESTING. There is so much to see you don’t want to look away.

I love that the info about Randy on his WEBSITE isn’t just a bullet list of accomplishments. I never make it through those… I like to hear the story behind the person, why they paint, how they paint, who they studied under, who they look up to, where they live, about their dog, ha ha… anything other than the regular blah blah blah… Randy’s website is very, very nice, I encourage you to check it out! Here’s a little blip about Randy from his website… for more, either check out his website, or click on the September link above to see more info… Here goes…

“A ‘painters’ painter’, Randall is one of the premier contemporary California landscape painters, also paints still-lifes, figures, and portraits with equal mastery…His work evokes deep feelings, whether it’s the solitude of a deserted street at night or the exultation of a beautiful landscape, each speaks softly to the viewer.”

Paula Frizbe has been a professional oil painter for over a decade. Her career in the arts spans almost 30 years. Her professional career has afforded her painting opportunities throughout the United States and in many foreign countries. She is a signature member of The Cumberland Society of Painters, Alla Prima International and Plein-Air Painter’s of the Southeast. Her work is owned by numerous private and corporate collectors. She is currently represented by several galleries in five states in the south and southeast.
“To me, the whole idea of painting is to respond to and then convey to others my view of the world around me. I find no pleasure in reinventing the world, nor seek a self-fulfilling inward gaze. My joy comes from the pure thrill of adventure.
The world is infinitely complex. The continual hunt for and then surprise finding of her mysteries is my sole motivation.”
