Fireworks on the 4th! Just say no?

Fireworks on the 4th? 📸: Bridget Fidler

Fireworks on the 4th of July, as American as apple pie, right? It seems as if everyone has them, and is shooting them off. It’s supposed to be a good time…

Or is it?

ANIMALS

Did you know that more dogs are lost during the 4th of July holiday than any other time of the year? Fireworks, loud parades and gatherings of people make them nervous. If YOUR dog is lost, they say not to chase them, try luring with a treat instead – when scared, dogs run from all people, even their owners. A good article from LostDogsOfAmerica.org. Tips for a 4th of July that is will make your pet more comfortable… Take them for a walk that morning to get some energy out. Be sure to take them outside (fenced area or on a leash) BEFORE the fireworks begin. Then close up the house, block windows from the flashes, turn on soothing music and turn it up. Also white noise, like a fan could be helpful. Some pets find comfort in compression, you’ve heard of a Thundershirt? Apparently they really make a difference.

If your dog hides under the bed or wherever, let them be. Don’t try to pull them out. After the fireworks are over grab a treat or one of their toys and see if they will come out willingly. If your dog doesn’t respond to any of these measures, you may want to contact your veterinarian to have something on hand to give them for anxiety during the fireworks!

PEOPLE

As a kid, I loved fireworks. My mindset has changed. For one, there are many combat veterans with PTSD.  You may see signs (like below) in some yards – If you do, please forgo the fireworks this year and encourage others to do the same. #itsonlyright

Please be courteous with FIREWORKS!

I’ll hop off my soapbox now 😉
