Guess the Artist #3 | Detroit Institute of Arts

Can you guess today’s artist? (Answer below) – Just look at these expressions, one of concentration and the young boy, what is his expression? I’m not finding information on what this painting is about? Does anyone have insight? The color palette is stunning – the young boy captures my attention and holds my eyes until I can almost not let go. Mesmerizing.

I took this photo at The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). The DIA houses so many historic paintings from virtually ever era. It can take many hours to get through – and that was after picking up the pace some. The first floor was filled with so many interesting things I couldn’t leave for quite a while, then to find the second and third floors are both filled with so many stunning paintings – uh oh! So maybe next time I’ll start on the third floor and work my way down 😉 You will get hungry and thirsty, but there are several restaurants, so you’re in luck. Everyone is so knowledgeable, how cool to work/volunteer in such a great place!

If you’re ever in the area – GO VISIT!!

Do you know who the artist is? Here’s the answer… (Information via Detroit Institute of Arts)

Refining Oil, 1910 Oil on canvas – by Charles Webster Hawthorne (American, 1872 – 1930).

Unframed: 40″ x 40″

Gift of Mr. Elliott T. Slocum

Many of you may have HAWTHORNE ON PAINTING, a book Charles Hawthorne wrote that is a valuable guide. It’s the same guy… his words ring as true today as they did all those years ago.
