Tollef Runquist is an exquisite artist represented by the Dowling Walsh Gallery in Rockland, Maine. His bright, contemporary style is refreshing. This painting is entitled LOOK  30 x 48. LOVE. IT! LOVE the bright pop of red against the great blue water… wow! If you’re in the Rockland, ME area I encourage you to stop by the Dowling Walsh Gallery (then pop over to Atlantic Bakery for a chocolate croissant, or they’re mushroom soup, or a cookie, or… or… or…. OR pop across the street to the Farnsworth Museum!), it’ll definitely be worth your time. They represent some FANTASTIC artists!

Here’s a blip from the Dowling Walsh Gallery website:

Artist’s Statement

Painting is for me an undertaking of appreciation and inquiry. It is a means by which to engage the beauty and mystery of visual experience in an ongoing dialogue. This is a widening puzzle; as I partake in this conversation it continually refreshes itself, revealing unexpected angles and new understanding. I feel no particular loyalty to realism or my own past work. I set to draw out a particular vision as long as my experience with it is visceral, attentive and useful. I try to encapsulate the fullness of my experience of a moment; weight and stillness, burning edges, massive, calm. These move me towards a particular subject, I try to paint and honor them, and then move on.

Some visual artists who have affected me deeply have been Richard Deibenkorn, Monet, De Kooning, Gauguin, Bonnard, Rothko, Sargent, Gordon Grant, Gerhart Richter, Hopper, Homer, Klimt and Egon Scheile among others. I have been drawing and painting as long as I can remember. I received a B.A. in studio Art from Dickinson college in 2002 and have since been continuing my education through creation.

Another blip from the Dowling Walsh website:

Tollef Runquist will have a solo exhibition at Dowling Walsh Gallery from Friday, September 2nd through Sunday, September 25th with an opening reception on Friday, September 2nd from 5 to 8 p.m.

Tollef Runquist has been featured in Maine Home and Design Magazine’s April 2011 Issue. Click the link below to view the feature:

Artist to watch… Frank Bruckmann!

Image: http://fbruckmann.com

What a unique story this artist has! Meet Frank Bruckmann. I first ran across this artist when searching for blogs about Monhegan. I found one called MONHEGAN SOJOURN, it was fabulous, not only did it showcase Frank’s art, but it included stories and pictures of Monhegan Island, a great love for many of us! I see that since the family has moved off the island they have started another blog (click HERE), more great art, stories, etc. I urge you to check it out! Also check out the artist’s website! The featured painting is entitled FROM WHITEHEAD and can be found on the artist’s website under the MONHEGAN tab!

Here’s a blip from Frank’s website:

Frank began his studies at the DuCret school of Art in New Jersey, and then took classes at the Art Students League in NYC. In Paris he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and spent nearly a decade in France and Spain, copying the masters in the great museums, and painting landscapes in the cities and countryside.

Now a resident of New Haven, CT, Frank has found endless subject matter for landscapes in New England, but periodically packs his easel and travels farther and wider in his VW camper.

How exciting is that? Check him out! Catch you back here tomorrow!

Artist to watch… Philip Frey!

Image: CourthouseGallery.com

Really, what can be more exciting than finding artists that are new to you?? Philip Frey is an artist from Ellsworth, Maine. He has some fabulous work, very exciting! Philip (one “L”) has a fabulous WEBSITE and lists all the galleries (with links!) that he’s affiliated with. This image came from the Courthouse Gallery website, it was painted this year and is entitled “Evening Light, Stonington”. If you get a chance check out his other work!

Here’s a blip from the Courthouse Gallery website:

Philip Frey is inspired by color and how he can use light and color to recreate Maine’s incredible landscape. His unique style has emerged over the last decade with recent paintings becoming more realistic. Throughout this evolution, Frey has continued to use strong, vibrant colors.

Frey’s sense of color stems from an interest in Fauvism, a major avant-garde European art movement in the 20th century. Henri Matisse, who Frey credits as a major influence, embraced this expressionistic style characterized by vivid, exuberant color. Other European artists, whose work Frey admires, include Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Edouard Manet.

View from Port Clyde, Maine

Port Clyde, ME

Ahhh, Port Clyde, Maine. It’s the most fabulous place in the world. No glitz and glitter, just down to earth kind people. Friendly people that you can sit with at the general store each morning and talk while you have coffee and toast. Or wonderful strangers that become friends that teach you how to knit! Hard working people who don’t complain. It’s somewhere everyone needs to see at least once. When we were there several years ago I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE. I still don’t. I want to go back… and I can’t wait until that happens… Also can’t wait to see our friends on Monhegan… woohoo, they say it’s healthy to have a vacation to look forward to, woohoo…

Artist to watch… Andrea Peters!

Image: GleasonFineArt.com

Now this is an artist that makes a statement! You can recognize her paintings quickly… no guessing if it’s Andrea Peters or not! Andrea has her work at Gleason Fine Art in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. If you’re in the area, stop by, say hello and check out her work… while there also check out Kevin Beers, I’ve mentioned him before, but he’s worth mentioning again!

Here’s a blip from Gleason’s website…

With her bold, brushy landscapes, Andrea Peters is one of Gleason Fine Arts most recognizable artists. She is a keen observer of the landscape around her. From her cove in East Boothbay, Maine, she paints the views surrounding her home in each season: her flower garden, the shores edge, waterfalls, and blueberry fields. Her paintings are composed for maximum expression. “I push beyond the obvious,” Peters says, and in doing so she creates a seismic shift in the way we see the landscape. The result is a visual extravaganza. To see more, click HERE.

Andrew Wyeth, Christina’s World and the Olson House at the Farnsworth Museum!

A Wyeth study for Christina's World - FarnsworthMuseum.org

Something I wouldn’t miss for the world if I were in the area! (Info from FarnsworthMuseum.org):

June 11, 2011 – October 30, 2011
The Wyeth Center

Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Farnsworth’s acquisition of the Olson House, scheduled in 2011 to be named a National Historic Landmark, this exhibition features approximately fifty watercolors and drawings depicting Alvaro and Christina Olson and the Cushing, Maine house in which they lived. The focus is on Alvaro’s and Christina’s lives at what has become known as the Olson House, seen through the eyes of Andrew Wyeth. The works wil not only include interior and exterior views of the house and the surrounding land, memorialized in Wyeth’s iconic painting Christina’s World (which hangs at the Museum of Modern Art and will not be a part of this exhibition,) but also twelve preparatory drawings and drafts of the famed work. All the works, with the exception of a select group from the Farnsworth, are from the collection of the Marunuma Art Park in Asaka, Japan. These works have rarely been seen in the United States.
Andrew Wyeth, Christina’s World and the Olson House is organized by Farnsworth Chief Curator Michael K. Komanecky with a fully illustrated catalogue published by the Farnsworth Art Museum.

This exhibition has been made possible in part through the generous support of the following lead sponsors: Tina and Joe Pyne; Arete Foundation/Betsy and Ed Cohen. Additional exhibition support was provided by Mr. Richard Gilder and Ms. Lois Chiles; Mrs. F. Eugene Dixon; Mr. and Mrs. George Twigg III.

Olson House depicted in Christina’s World now a national landmark…

Image: Maps.Google.com

News from the art world… if you’ve missed the paper the past few weeks, here’s an update… as reported by AP.

An old weather beaten farmhouse that sits in Cushing, Maine, the scene of one of Andrew Wyeth’s most famous paintings, and one of the most famous paintings of the 20th century is now officially a national landmark.

The Olson House is where Andrew painted CHRISTINA’S WORLD (among others) back in 1948.  He painted Christina Olson (who lived in this house), who suffered from some sort of muscular disease thought to be polio, she was unable to walk and had resorted to crawling at times. There are so many interesting stories that go along with Christina’s World, I will save for another post… You can visit the Olson house via the Farnsworth Museum. The house is open June – October.

Edward Hopper’s Maine…

Image: ArtFixDaily.com

Ooooh how I love Edward Hopper’s work! His Maine paintings especially… love his version of Blackhead on Monhegan Island, ME… This painting is entitled “The Dories, Ogunquit” painted in 1914.

Oh how I would love to be going to this…

Brunswick, Maine- The Bowdoin College Museum of Art has organized the first comprehensive exhibition of Edward Hopper’s artistic production in Mainefrom 1914 to 1929. On view from July 15 through October 16, 2011, Edward Hopper’s Maine will showcase nearly 90 rarely exhibited paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints that provide an exhaustive look at Hopper’s work during this period. Hopper’sMaine paintings span two critical decades of the artist’s career, yet have never been studied as a unified body of work and are often overlooked in favor of his better-known paintings from the 1930s forward. This long-overdue exhibition will present Hopper’sMaine oeuvre together for the first time, reexamining and demonstrating its significance to his later production. The Bowdoin College Museum of Art will be the exhibition’s sole venue. Artist to watch… JULIA NICHOLS!

Image: JMNichol.com

On our first visit to Maine, many years ago, we met a wonderful artist. We were at the fall L.L. Bean Art Show in Freeport, ME. The show was huge, with many great artists, but one stood out… her name? JULIA NICHOLS. Check out her website (click HERE). Her paintings are so DIFFERENT, so fantastic… we loved one that was of a road on Monhegan Island with two walkers. It reminded us of, well… US! We called her the following year to see if we could stop by and see some of her work, and guess what? We did and that painting was still available! We bought it, had the best visit and still love to follow her work. Check out Julia’s website, and if you’re in Yarmouth, Maine, give her a call! She’s as nice as they come!

Artist to watch… Guy Corriero!

Image: WiscassetBayGallery.com

Artist to watch… Guy Corriero! This painting, ROUGE WAVE, is out of this world! The colors of the water are spot on, the movement is fantastic, you can feel it, you can even smell the salt in the air. Ok, maybe I exaggerate a little, but I swear I can even HEAR these waves crashing. What caught my eye on this particular painting was how the light hit the waves and how part of the painting is in shadow. So interesting!  I ran across Guy Corriero’s paintings at Wiscasset Bay Gallery, one of my favorite galleries! Keith Oehmig has such a wonderful selection of art, surely everyone could walk out with something to treasure forever! If you get a chance check out Wiscasset Bay Gallery (www.wiscassetbaygallery.com) and check out Guy’s work!

Artist to watch… Jane Ryan!

Image: JaneRyan.com

I remember the first time I saw one of Jane Ryan’s acrylic paintings… at Maine Cottage in Charleston, SC. Maine Cottage has since shuttered it’s doors, but the one painting that we saw years ago lives on in my mind. It was facinating… a very different woods scene. The painting in the post is from the artists website, it’s entitled LAST LEG. I like her work, it’s so different. Very refreshing. If you get a chance, check out her website. You will also notice a list of galleries, so I would check those out as well!

Artist to watch… Bradley Hendershot!

Image: BradleyHendershot.com

Bradley Hendershot. Nice guy… met him a few years ago on Monhegan Island. He does fabulous watercolors mainly of Pennsylvania, Maine and Maryland’s eastern shore. If you aren’t familiar with his work, check him out! He has a website with paintings, gallery information and upcoming exhibitions. Brad’s work reminds me of some of Andrew Wyeth’s work.

Funny thing, when I think of Brad I think of blueberry Pop-Tarts. Ha… He had a studio set up on Monhegan across from the Island Inn (the John Sterling House for those of you who are familiar), Fred and I popped (yuck, yuck) in to introduce ourselves and check out his work and there were boxes of blueberry Pop-Tarts on the counters. Not just a few boxes… MANY boxes. Too funny… what’s any better than an unfrosted blueberry Pop-Tart? Too bad it’s not health food…! So if you haven’t seen Brad’s work before, click on the website link above!

Artist to watch… Keith Oehmig!

Image: WiscassetBayGallery.com

Wiscasset. LOVE that little town… “Maine’s prettiest Village” also has a pretty fantastic gallery, Wiscasset Bay Gallery. Keith Oehmig, the guy who established Wiscasset Bay Gallery, just happens to be a fabulous artist as well as a really nice guy. The kind of guy you WANT to buy a painting from. The piece above is entitled “Camden Waterfront” (oil on board/24×30) is an excellent representation of his work, AND while I already had him scheduled to be a post on this blog, an art card arrived in the mail with this very painting on it! Whoa…! It’s wonderful receiving those cards, and THANK YOU to the galleries who still send them. I have a bulletin board full of artists that we would like to collect from one day… This card is now going on my bulletin board!

If you haven’t been to Wiscasset, what a fabulous place to stop! If you haven’t been in Wiscasset Bay Gallery… hoof it on over there! You’ll be SO GLAD you did! It’s a treasure of paintings!
