I love sharing recipes I run across that make life easier. Instead of guessing when a steak is done, this is a good guide to ensure they turn out beautifully. We don’t have steak often, so when we do, it is absolutely amazing – we used to wait for a restaurant for steak, but no more! It’s easier than you think! I chose sirloin steak because it’s lean, so if we’re going to eat beef, I try to keep it on the leaner side.
I found this recipe on wholesomeyum.com – Click the link below to print the recipe or to read it – she has a LOT of details, I’m just posting my sticky note version of how to grill a good sirloin steak. We’ve tried this recipe twice (all in the name of research, ha ha) – and it was perfect both times.
Note: Maya mentions choosing a steak that is at least 1″ thick, preferably 1.5″ thick. So take that into consideration…

Marinate your steak – she gives many options and suggests a longer time to marinate than I ever have had time for, mine has only been a few minutes and it turned out great!
I simply dried off the steaks and drizzled a little Worcestershire sauce and a sprinkle of pepper. That’s it. I think the first time I did oil/then drizzle – second time I forgot to oil and it was actually prettier.
Heat grill to 500 degrees F for at least 15 minutes (you want the grill really hot!). Take steaks out of fridge so they aren’t cold.
❤️🔥 Place steaks onto the grill, close the lid and set your timer for 2 minutes.
❤️🔥 Flip the steaks with TONGS (do not pierce with a fork or stubby thing), close the lid, timer set for 2 minutes.
❤️🔥 Reduce heat to medium-low. Grill until they reach your desired degree of wellness. (Use a meat thermometer to be sure). For 1.5″ steaks, this translates to:
- RARE: 1-2 minutes (120 degrees F)
- MEDIUM RARE: 2-3 minutes (130 degrees F)
- MEDIUM: 3-4 minutes (140 degrees F)
- MEDIUM WELL: 4-5 minutes (150 degrees F)
- WELL: 5-6 minutes (160 degrees F)
Note: if steak is less than 1.5″ it could take less time. If the steak is cold it could take less time/if thicker than 1.5″ it could take longer – a meat thermometer ensures it’s the right temperature – so keep that in mind.
Transfer to a plate, cover with foil and let rest for 5 minutes.

The first time we had this we also had corn on the cob and I made guacamole – a really nice combo. I didn’t even have chips with my guac, it was great with the steak!
The second time we had this I sautéed mushrooms, so we had steak, mushrooms and a small salad. Wow!!
👩💻 Until next time…
I love a good steak! Yesterday, I just happened to have picked up some thick sirloins from Aldi, so I can’t wait to try this. Thanks for sharing!
