We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area of Charleston, SC. This neighborhood will soon be 100 years old. Amazing the architecture and the quality of building. I love how, back in the day, they had the foresight to plant a live oak tree in front of each house. These magical trees make this area absolutely breathtaking.
There are many older neighborhoods in Charleston, SC. Our location is off the peninsula of (downtown) Charleston. We have the convenience to downtown with easier parking and far less people. Additionally, there is accessibility to shops and stores (a very short walk away) or the beach (about 8 miles away).
Like many older neighborhoods in Charleston, growth is a factor. It is my hope that people realize what a special place an older neighborhood is. Demoing a home to build a new home is not ideal for this area. We hope to keep the architectural styles that exist presently without having too much change. It’s not easy. Thankfully, most residents seem to be on board with maintaining their homes and making changes that suit them but still keep the character intact.
What is character? That question came up at a preservation meeting the other evening. Character is defined differently by each person who is asked. To me, “preserving the character” of this neighborhood would be to keep what drew us to this location. The older homes styles (bungalow, Tudor, etc.) and quality of building without mixing in new styles. To keep the trees as healthy as possible by not parking on their roots. We should also consider underground power to limit pruning by utility companies. Keeping sidewalks in good shape (this is an active community to say the least!). And, we should allow expansion when needed for growing families. This expansion can be achieved (ideally) by adding to the back of the house. Dormers that aren’t seen from the public right of way (ROW) or are in a style that flows with the current homes can also be added. Other nearby cities have these ordinances in tact and their areas are beautiful. So far, we’ve been fortunate, but it’s best to be proactive, right? Because once it’s gone (the character), it’s gone!
I took this photo back when the azaleas were blooming. Sometimes the entire street blooms at the same time and sometimes it’s here and there. Striking either way. There is a sense of peace that comes with living among these beautiful trees. What do you love about where you live?
Well, another month is nearly behind us. Good grief, it happens so quickly! Enjoy your weekend!
☀️ Until next time…
