Stunning, isn’t it? This photo was taken a while ago when we were in Michigan. When I drive this relatively long stretch as a passenger, I’m usually taking photos, a lot of photos. A few will turn out. I love the trees in this shot. There are only a few. This is a lakeplain prairie. If you have never heard of such a thing, take a quick peek and discover what that is. Beautiful yes, but this area holds memories, ha ha – (This is a photo from a year or two ago, we aren’t in MI now)…
St. John’s Wet Prairie Natural Area is part of a highly significant cluster of lakeplain prairies within the St. Clair River delta. Lakeplain prairies are relatively flat, occurring on sand ridges overlaying clay. Read more from Pure Michigan, HERE.
To get to where I grew up you drive down a two lane road with lakeplain prairies on each side. Which can be a little dicey when the weather turns icy and you head that way to work, water on each side of you.
❄️Growing up, my memory of this area was in the winter. Several of us went snowmobiling. The water was frozen and covered in snow. I was a passenger on the back of a snowmobile. Off we went up high mounds of snow and slamming down the other side. For some reason the person driving stopped and waited for the people behind us. Here they came flying up in the air and *BAM* onto my leg. To ride with a broken leg on the back of a snowmobile in the icy cold was something not to forget. It was the last time I was on a snowmobile. I was fine, everything healed well – youth. Gotta love it.
👩💻 Until next time…

Wow, what a story! That sounds like quite the adventurous (and slightly terrifying!) snowmobile experience. It’s amazing how resilient we can be in our youth, bouncing back from injuries like that.
It’s understandable that the incident might have turned you away from snowmobiling, but it’s also a testament to how memorable those experiences can be, even with a bit of unexpected drama. Thanks for sharing your vivid memory!
It makes me curious, though – despite that wild ride, do you still enjoy winter activities in general? Or has that experience shifted your preferences towards other outdoor pursuits?

After that experience (long, long ago) I didn’t shy away from other winter activities. I loved cross country skiing – being able to meander through the woods without a care in the world. Breathtaking. Oh, to be young and carefree – I’m sure it helped! Thanks so much for your comment, despite the injury, it truly was a good time (until)…
