Featured Artist: Jimmy Craig Womble!

Brant’s Kitchen by Jimmy Craig Womble 18×24 Oil – Sold

Paintings of Interiors are a favorite of mine. I enjoy seeing what the artist captures (and what they may leave out) – everyone is a little different, but most I’ve seen are pretty incredible. If you think about it, it’s not an easy subject. It’s something that we’re all familiar with, we know how it should look – yet these paintings don’t just show an interior space, they tell a story. A story about the people who live there, what they’re up to. In this case I would guess that these people like to cook, although the kitchen isn’t large it appears to be well equipped and ready to create a wonderful meal. There is a lot to paint and I have to say that Jimmy did it so well. Love it! Be sure to check out more paintings on Jimmy’s website…

Read a bit about Jimmy, from his website:

I am an oil painter living on the coast of North Carolina. I paint that which has usually been overlooked by many as old, run down, or without value. Abandoned houses, old barns, rusty vehicles, and the detritus of a once thriving farming and fishing region find their way into many of my works. They tell a story of the south that I could never put into words. The rust and decay is a physical reminder of the passage of time, and speaks of those who have struggled to make a life in this part of the country.

But I have my own selfish reasons as well for painting what I do. I find a certain beauty in the peeling paint and rust of forgotten things. The light falling over these old objects and places has an intensity and sparkle that is endlessly fascinating to me. There will always be new things, but how long will I continue to be able to paint  those reminders of what used to be? Both man and nature conspire against them, so I hoard their images in pads and on canvas.

Featured Artist: Tom Balderas! [workshop alert]

Study by Tom Balderas

Isn’t this painting striking? Everything about it makes me smile. I especially love the imperfection, the fact that the fruit is not exactly round, which can be so boring. To be able to paint like this would be a dream! Loving those subtle shadows and light, the background, the composition, the brush strokes, absolutely everything! The little touches that Tom makes can change a painting and take it from nice to stunning at the speed of light. Those little bits of orange make my heart sing! Brilliant!

I have always loved Tom’s paintings. He has his own distinct style, his paintings stand out to me. Are you an artist who needs a nudge in the right direction or just wants to see what you may pick up from someone who’s paintings have such a unique quality? If so, you may be in luck! Tom has a 3 day workshop beginning Friday, May 19, 2017 at Del Mar Art Academy and it’s going to be fabulous! From their website:

Tom will be teaching painting in what is called the “gestural color method,” emphasizing the idea of trusting the first impression you receive when observing the subject you wish to paint – whether still life, landscape, figurative or from reference material. If practiced with regularity this approach to painting can take a painter far and help to instill the attitude that “all great painting can be found in the honest and humble study.” Click HERE to read more about the workshop!

Tom also has an ongoing Thursday workshop in Newport, if interested, contact Tom: tombalderas@gmail(dot)com

Read a bit about Tom, from his website. This is one of my all time favorite bio’s. Not only is Tom creative with paint, he is so creative with words!

Balderas attended Loyola Marymount University, where he studied film production and art. After graduating, he worked several years for NBC Productions and made many made-for-television movies. He then began studying under the tutelage of his photographer father, as well as Joseph Mendez, master painter and teacher. Featured Artist: Brennen McElhaney!

Charleston Street Corner by Brennen McElhaney  14×11″  Acrylic

Brennen McElhaney. Nice work! A few Charleston scenes caught my eye (I always love to see the way artists all capture Charleston a little differently). The painting above has been a few different restaurants over the years, it is currently a brewery company/restaurant. The old brick on this building is that wonderful color that turns to magic when that right light hits it. This painting is a beautiful interpretation of that architecture. Right down to the lamp post and the stop lights, Brennen captured this so perfectly.

Be sure to check out Brennen’s website – his paintings, stories, blog, etc. – he has wonderful information!

Read a bit about Brennen, from his website:

Brennen McElhaney was born in 1968 in Santa Barbara, California. He studied fine art and illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1990. Back in California, Brennen married Sheila Springer in 1992. As newly-weds they had the opportunity to run a fine art gallery for a time.

Brennen went on to have one-man art shows at the Delphine Gallery, the Hahn-Horn Gallery, Gallery 113, the Faulkner Gallery, Sterling K Gallery, the University Club of Santa Barbara, Antioch University and the Gallery Off Grand (Los Olivos, Ca.). During that time he served on the board of directors of the Santa Barbara Art Association.

In 2005, Brennen, along with his wife and their three children, relocated from California to Western North Carolina. They live in Fletcher (Asheville) NC.

Mr. McElhaney is creator and curator of the website AVLarts.com which promotes the visual arts in the Asheville area by listing a directory of local artists, galleries and art resources. Brennen works as an illustrator and art director, his main client being Oodles World, a family entertainment company. Continue reading HERE

Featured Artist: Jose Pardo!

The Muse by Jose Pardo 28×22″ Oil

Jose Pardo. Wonderful still life & figurative paintings. I chose one as an example – be sure to check out his website!

Jose can paint detail wonderfully. It looks as if you could reach in and grab a tool right out of this painting. I liked the description Jose gave regarding this painting (I love it when artists add a blip about a painting):

“My father-in-law can fix just about anything, from a commercial airliner to a lawnmower. We’ve inherited quite a few old fashioned tools from him. This is one of the rare still life paintings I did not have to purchase a single prop for.”

Read a bit about Jose, from his website:

I was born in 1964 in Habana Cuba and migrated to Spain at the age of 5 with my mother and grandmother. I spent two years in the outskirts of Madrid learning to play futbol, absorbing the local accent, and trying at times unsuccessfully, to stay out of trouble. When we arrived in the United States, I was overwhelmed at the enormous size of the skyscrapers and cars in New York City. As a child I loved to travel into Manhattan with my grandfather to purchase fabrics for his custom tailor business, all the while hoping to catch a glimpse of Spiderman swinging between the skyscrapers. I started learning to draw by copying comic books. At that early age I couldn’t comprehend how it was possible for people to draw such amazing art, since my attempts to replicate the drawings were abysmal.

Being the first in my family with a serious interest in art, I have to credit my High School art teacher, Thomas Carcich with giving me my foundation in art and being instrumental in guiding me to study art in college. After receiving a BFA from Jersey City State College (now New Jersey City University) in 1988, I worked in several  small business to business advertising agencies in New Jersey as an artist before marrying and moving to Orlando Florida to start a family with my wife in 1992. Here I have worked as an artist for Disney, Scholastic, and Universal among others enjoying my share of success in both the commercial and Fine Arts.

I returned to my first true art-love, oil painting, in 2012 after an unintentional hiatus of well over 20 years. Wanting to give my mother a more unique Birthday present than in recent years, I decided to do a small oil painting for her. While delighted at how much I enjoyed the process, I was more than a little dismayed at how much I had forgotten! Although Mom loved the painting, I immediately set out to bring my skill with oils up to where I wanted them to be. I know I can never reach my ever advancing and evolving goal, but I strive to make progress with every painting. I’ve repurposed and refurbished my home studio to paint from life. That’s where I can always be found trying to make up for lost time. With more ideas than time to paint them all, my easel is never empty. I have been fortunate to win recognition in all the juried local art shows and am starting to enjoy success at the regional level. I still live and paint in Orlando with my wonderfully supportive wife, two amazing children, and three very mischievous cats.

Be sure to check Jose out on Facebook and Instagram (PardoStudio).

Sara Jane Reynolds. Beautiful Lowcountry paintings. I especially adore her lily series – Stunning! The pink in this painting is so fabulous with the wonderful greens! And those little flowers, oooh! The distant water is so interesting to me, a variety of colors and brush strokes brings life!

Artist’s Statement

As a plein air painter, I carry my easel and paints into the marshes and islands of the low country. Inspiration springs from the beauty and richness of this untamed landscape. I grew up in Pasadena, California: My father a a Civil Engineer/Architect and mother a Musician/Poet/Painter. We spent part of every summer in Yosemite. The visual impact of the valley, trees, rocks and the core of artists and writers who journeyed there impacted me greatly. I developed a deep love of nature, self expression, passion for our great country.

On canvas I write love letters in gold and green.

Featured Artist: Robert Strickland!

Dahlia Arrangement by Robert Strickland 24″X18″ Oil

Robert Strickland is an artist from Toronto, Canada – and whoa, can he ever paint! I think the Dahlia Arrangement painting is perfection. The backdrop and surface leave your imagination to fill in, yet the jars and flowers are out of this world realistic. The varying beautiful colors are a joy!

If you’re in the Toronto, Canada area and looking for a workshop, check out Robert’s website for more info, while you’re there just look at the beautiful paintings!

Read a bit about Robert, from his website:

Robert Strickland is a professional artist from Toronto, Canada. Robert was first inspired by nature and his surroundings. He recalls having a deep connection and appreciation for nature from a young age. It wasn’t until he was in his twenties that he was exposed to art however. He took a fundamental art program at Sheridan College to learn some basics and meet other artists. At this point he was more interested in illustration. After the program ended, he learnt in a more autodidactic way. He went to life drawing consistently and at one point just jumped into oil painting. With an intense dedication and a rational way of solving problems, he learn’t quickly. After making great progress he was awarded the Chalmers Professional Development Grant. This allowed him to study abroad from contemporary masters in representational art. After he felt the need to go back to his roots in Canadian culture to form as a mature artist. Painting “en plein air” connected him with nature once again, his voice in art became louder and more distinct. Through Roberts art we can see an appreciation of nature and an intimate way of looking at it. Robert believes the appreciation of art teaches values and connects us with a universal language. Continue reading, here

Featured Artist: Dyana Hesson!

Passion in the Desert by Dyana Hesson 36×36″ Oil

Dyana Hesson. Wonderful, vibrant paintings. Dyana’s paintings are full of life. Passion in the Desert reminds me of a cactus I had as a kid. It always amazed me that something that received so little water, could do so well. It thrived in my windowsill. The bright orange flower just gorgeous.

Dyana paints more than cacti, although they are fabulous, be sure to check them out!!!

The featured painting is available at Bonner David Gallery – Dyana has more work on their website. Wow, wow, wow!

Read a bit about Dyana, from her website:

Dyana was born in 1966 in the Gold Country of California. There she was always happiest outdoors. Her weekends were spent visiting the local nursery and working on the natural landscaping of her family’s home.

When she was 12, her father gave her a camera. She began photographing all that was interesting to her; the trees, the flowers, and the natural landscapes.

After a short stay in Southern California (where she met and married her husband in 1985), she moved to Arizona. Although the climate and landscape varied drastically from that of California, the inspiration did not.

Dyana became interested in painting as a way to express things that she couldn’t through a lens alone. She chose oil as her medium because it possessed a fluid quality perfect for the subjects she was painting. She began to experiment with thin layers of carefully blended paint, and the results were luminous. She earned her degree in Art at Arizona State University in 1991 and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

After a four year detour to southern Michigan, Dyana and her family returned to Arizona. She continues to live in Mesa with her husband Randy, daughter Sydney and Dog Boon.

Dyana is always in search of her next painting. She takes long hikes in the desert and mountains, and frequently visits botanical gardens across the country. She feels she has the most success when she has the luxury of bringing her subjects home. She then has more time to study them and combine them with other elements. Using only natural lighting in her paintings, timing and weather are always factors.

Dyana is most excited about using her art to glorify God by drawing attention to His creation. She feels that the relationships and opportunities to serve with her art have been the most valuable aspect of her career.

Marina at Dusk by Kaethe Bealer  24×24″  Acrylic

Oh! How I love this painting. A glimpse into another life. “The Listener” – what a perfect title! I love the vantage point of this painting – from a dog’s perspective! Harrington Gallery’s 7th Annual FRESH WORKS Juried Exhibition is returning. FRESH WORKS VII is an exhibition opportunity for emerging and established artists who reside or work in the greater Bay Area, with the focus of the exhibition being on new works.

I would love to see more interiors by Kaethe, she clearly has a knack for painting them! And animals… wow! Be sure to check her website and you’ll see what I mean!

Read a bit about Kaethe, from her website:

Kaethe Bealer is a painter who works in oil and acrylic.

Like so many artists, I have been doing art since I was a kid. I have been studying seriously for the last 15 years. I live in the Bay Area and have been fortunate to study with several great artists such as Stanley Goldstein, Peggi Kroll Roberts and Tim Horn. I work in oils and acrylics. I live on a boat. When I paint aboard it’s usually a smaller scale painting and in acrylic. I paint larger oils in my land studio which happens to be a spare bedroom at my father in-law’s.I enjoy painting the effects of light and shadow on all kinds of subject matter. The more I paint the more I see color nuances and value shifts. I am enjoying my process and hope to get better and better. Thank you for looking at my work!

Featured Artist: Gregory Stocks!

Along the Road Home by Gregory Stocks 48×48″ Oil [Sold]

Gregory Stocks. Wonderful paintings, fabulous website! I love the rich tones in this painting, “Along the Road Home”. This painting is sold, but isn’t it stunning? The sharp contrast between the trees and the sky, and the wonderful light – beautiful!

Backlight Waterfront by Gregory Stocks 24×36″ Oil

Another stunning painting. The sky… wow! Gregory’s trees are so full of character. The water is stunning, especially with the reflections from that gorgeous sky. If Gregory’s work seems familiar, you may have seen it in Southwest Art or American Art Collector.

Read a bit about Gregory, from his website:

Gregory Stocks has been a professional exhibiting artist since 1998 and is recognized for his remarkable combination of classical representation and contemporary execution.  His style is stark, with a clean, contemporary feel.  The imagery he creates is intended to represent not so much a specific place as “a place in one’s heart, the internal landscape”.

Born in Lubbock, Texas, Gregory lived in California, Washington and Idaho before arriving in Utah in 1981 to attend Utah State University, where he earned a bachelors degree in art.  Stocks has been included in the publications Southwest Art Magazine and American Art Collector.  In addition to exhibiting at the US Embassy in Brussels, Belgium, in 2005, his work is included in many private and public collections throughout the US and abroad. The Artist Felicity House Painting in Venice  24x30cms  Oil

Haidee Jo Summers – WOW! Her paintings are perfection! The perfect balance of looseness, the subjects are all interesting, colors are wonderful and she nails it every single time!

What a wonderful painting (above). This artist’s face is perfection – you can how she’s concentrating on what she’s painting. This is amazing!

Evening Light Polperro Harbour by Haidee Jo Summers  30×32″  Oil (Sold)

To me, this painting is pure magic. The stillness in the water and the beautiful reflections. The boats sitting so serenely in the water. Those little pops of orange that just make me love this painting even more. And those little touches that make it sing, like the orangey color underneath the tented canopy on the sailboat in the foreground, the shadows from the boats in the water and that wonderful sky! It’s perfect!

Read a bit about Haidee, from her website:

Awarded Artist of the Year 2012 by the Society of All Artists and one of the few artists chosen by the BBC to paint the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant from the Millennium bridge, Haidee-Jo is a full-time professional artist known for painting landscapes and seascapes ‘en plein air’.

In recent years she has been invited to take part in UK and international plein air events whilst winning many prizes for her work which features fresh and vibrant brushwork coupled with keen drawing and observational skills, resulting in paintings that glow with light and sing with colour.

Haidee-Jo gained a degree in illustration following an art foundation course and graduated in 1994. She has been exhibiting and teaching ever since, in recent years having cut back on teaching commitments to focus on painting. Judy Joy Nocifora. A wonderful artist that has quite the following when it comes to workshops. From her blog, it looks like her students really have fun and learn at the same time, is there a better way? I think not!

Judy did a demo of Charlie, our Jack Russell. From an image she was able to capture his essence so well. Not an easy task to paint this dog, he’s got hair going every which way, and for it to really look like Charlie it takes some doing! It’s a beautiful painting – she’s even got his funny sit that he does. This is Charlie – lover of the sun, sits in the sun and follows it throughout the house all day. He sits and his eyes get heavy until he can’t take it anymore.

Judy is teaching an oil painting workshop specifically for animal lovers – it begins April 4 (2017)! Interested? Here’s the information, but be quick, I’m sure her workshops fill up quickly! Be sure to check out her website and blog as well!

The artwork of Judy Joy Nocifora has unfolded through many years of an insatiable desire to create. In her teens, she began studying formal oil painting with a highly regarded local instructor and she continued a keen interest in the arts and in the creative process through years of teaching in a program for gifted students.

Upon retirement, Judy embarked on a serious commitment to study intently and diligently with artist whose work she admired in order to become a professional artist. She has had the great pleasure to study with master artists, Jeff Legg, Dawn Whitelaw, Jennifer McChristian, Peggi Kroll Roberts, John Pototschnik, Roger Dale Brown, and Camille Przewodek, and Lori Putnam, to name a few. One of her great joys is to share what she has learned with others as an oil painting instructor for Creative Aging of the Mid-South and at the Memphis Botanic Gardens.

Today, Judy travels extensively to paint and she loves to share the beauty that she finds everywhere through her oil paintings. Her artwork has been juried into local and regional exhibitions. Out My Window, Sunday by Bethany Fields  11 X 14″  Pastel on Paper

What a pleasure to look at Bethany’s website. It’s full of beautiful paintings. Most are pastel, and STUNNING! This painting caught my eye immediately. How fabulous! I love the dark landscape and the brighter green grass with the light coming through the clouds. WOW! Also love the bits of orange on the side of the road. Just beautiful!

Read about Bethany, from her website (and be sure to check out her paintings):

“We find only the world we look for.”

                                                     – Thoreau –

This is a favorite quote of Bethany’s, and one that resonates within her as she brings color to paper.  Primarily a pastelist, Bethany has been surrounded by art in many forms since youth and is constantly looking for beauty and how to express it.  Dance, music, theatre, and photography studies have molded her particular vision, which focuses on light in the landscape and how it affects our mood.  Bethany graduated from Texas Tech with a BFA in Theatre.  She went on to perform professionally and continued honing her skills in composition and design working in Burbank, CA for a DIY web series. Her creations have been published in several national magazines, including Country Living.  In 2016, Bethany had the honor of exhibiting at both the Salmagundi Club and the National Arts Club in New York, NY, where her work was selected for an ongoing exhibit at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH.  She travels nationally and internationally for art societies and workshops, and produces her own Youtube channel, focusing on teaching and demonstrating her pastel techniques. Bethany is a proud 7th generation Texan, and she and her husband of 17 years are raising their three children in Amarillo, TX.  She paints daily in her home studio and is an active member of the American Impressionist Society, The Degas Pastel Society,  and is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America.

Artist Statement

I believe the world exists in beauty and we are here to notice.  Everyday I look out my window and wonder how the ever-changing light, the trees, the sky, and the clouds could be overlooked by our busy, busy world.   In the daily rush of life I know my purpose is to slow down and capture,  share, and remember the beautiful moments that pass so quickly.  Infusing my work with love, beauty, and light is my constant passion and studying this beautiful Earth is my joy.  Click HERE to read more…

Featured Artist: Meisha Grichuhin!

New Brighton Waves by Meisha Grichuhin  11 x 14″  Oil

I think the feel of Meisha Grichuhin’s “New Brighton Waves” painting is soft and beautiful. Love the pinky lavender in the distance and that wonderful green in the nearby waves. The reflections on the beach are fabulous, as is the craggy coastline. Those rocks… they rock! Just one of many beautiful paintings by Meisha!

Read a bit about Meisha, from her website (Artist’s Statement):

I spend much of my time outdoors, whether hiking, horseback riding, or just enjoying nature. These interests and a reverence for the natural landscape are reflected in my paintings. My current body of work consists of California landscapes. In my painting Evening Glow, a backlit horse grazes on rolling green pastures as the sunset creates a warm haze on the receding hills.

I  am constantly inspired by the beauty of nature. The sights, smells, and sounds of the different seasons all influence the scenes I choose to paint. Growing up in California, I have been fortunate to experience the varied types of landscapes the state has to offer. The temperate climate allows for year round adventuring. Spending quality time in the outdoors keeps me refreshed and awed by the endless subjects that nature provides. I strive to represent on canvas the mood of scenes through painterly brushwork and slightly exaggerated color.

Through a balance of bold and delicate brush strokes, I aim to portray the beauty of the natural landscape. Rolling hills, powerful oak trees, and peaceful horses suggest the relaxing yet exciting countryside of California.
