From the Archives: Sunset in Maine

A photo from the archives – Maine

Every year I tell myself I need to clean out my almost 9,000 images, I start out doing it, then I get busy and forget about it. The following year I need to clean out almost 10,000 images (and this is after cleaning out during the year) – well… now I’m past 11,000 +++ and I need to get control. So as I start to look back at old photos (but not yet clean out) I’ll share a one from the archives… Continue reading “From the Archives: Sunset in Maine”

A peaceful photo to start your day…

Thanksgiving. Over. Whew, time flies! Christmas… SOON! Can you believe it? This is a time of year that causes many of us stress. Trying to buy just the right gift for so many people, shopping, eating – remember the reason for the season – we may all have different beliefs, but I’m pretty sure most of us can agree that Christmas isn’t all about shopping.

Take time to be with family and friends, try to not get too stressed between now and Christmas – a tall order indeed!

Remember…

It’s not what you have in life, it’s how you make people feel.

Make someone feel happy, loved and appreciated. Take an extra moment with those who no longer have family. They could certainly use a smile and a quick hello!

Go out. Do good. Patience is a virtue and I’m pretty sure you’re going to need patience today!

May the force be with you 😉

The Lupine Gallery – Monhegan, Maine. THE perfect reason to plan a trip to the island, whether it’s just for a day or for longer – it’s so worth it to make it out to this gallery. This is the view from the upstairs, pretty stunning isn’t it? My husband and I spend a lot of time walking around and enjoying the many fabulous artists that have work there. They also have wonderful cards, books, etc.

If you’re wanting to take a peek at what they have right now, lucky you! You can go online! Go check it out! Click the link below…

The gallery is located on the Island, on the main village road and just up the hill from the town wharf.  We are open from 11 am- 4:30 pm, seven days a week, from May into October, and are available during the off-season by chance or appointment.  We live year round on Monhegan, and welcome your call or email anytime.

Contact us by phone at 207-594-8131 or via email.

We offer safe, insured shipping to any destination, or can package your new acquisition to safely and securely travel home with you.

In addition to original artwork, we carry an inventory of fine art prints and cards of Monhegan, including signed limited edition giclee prints by Jamie Wyeth, Paul Niemiec, Kevin Beers and Mary Alice Treworgy.  Our book selections range from the history of art on the island to many books of interest to artists and collectors today.   We also stock a selection of paints and art supplies, and are always happy to fill special orders.

We also offer custom mat cutting and framing services, with an emphasis on conservation framing.

Whether you’re staying at one of Monhegan’s inns or cottages, attending an artists’ workshop, or just visiting for a day, stop in and say hello, and enjoy our ever-evolving group show and exciting special exhibits.

We’re looking forward to seeing you on the Rock!

More Monhegan Flowers!

Monhegan Flowers

Aren’t these flowers so cool? Not a lot of color which kind of makes them unique. Who knows what these are called? I don’t know if this is how they always look or if this is toward the end of their lives? I just know that I find these flowers fascinating. The subtle purple hue is too cool! Monhegan flowers – they’re stunning!

Happy Halloween! A Sea Pumpkin by Jamie Wyeth

A Sea Pumpkin by Jamie Wyeth (print) via Chadds Ford Gallery

Nothing says HAPPY HALLOWEEN like this painting! (Well, this is a print, but someone has the actual painting) – this stunning painting blows me away. The vibrance of the pumpkin with the light and the stem that twists and turns and is quite delicate at the end AS IS THE SHADOW.

I have this thing with shadows. When done perfectly they make a painting so much more dynamic. I love a stark contrast, and this painting shows just that. Vibrant, moving, mysterious, fun, magical. I love it!

Visit the Chadds Ford Gallery website for more work by Jamie Wyeth (as well as his father and grandfather – what a talented family!) – he paints with such passion. Wow.

Monhegan

Ahhh, Monhegan! It seems as if I start most of my Monhegan posts that way. This is the building that you first see on the wharf. On the side of this building are all the notices about what’s happening, studios that are open, restaurant info, etc. Like a newspaper, it’s all there. If you ever get a chance to visit, even if only for the day, I highly suggest! It’s less than a one hour ride via Monhegan Boat Lines, which is the way we always come (Port Clyde, ME).

Happy Sunday!

Leaving Port Clyde, Maine Headed Towards Monhegan

Leaving Port Clyde Headed to Monhegan | barbara stroud

Talk about ethereal! This scene, the feeling while being there, and that fantastic light in the midst of the fog were all captured in this photo. This is the scene as we were leaving Port Clyde, Maine (in the distance), headed to Monhegan. Always a good time, the fog made it extra special this time!

Happy weekend – catch you back here tomorrow!

Port Clyde Dock in Fog

Port Clyde Dock | barbara stroud

I love snapping photos when the water is like glass, where the reflections are sharp and dramatic. It’s especially cool with fog hovering in the air. This year we had the foggiest trip to the island (Monhegan), thankfully the seas weren’t rough in the fog. I have heard stories…

The return trip was a bit rough, but at least you could see the coastline. The ability to see land and have my Sea Bands on did the trick, thank goodness!

SuNgLaSsEs! 😎

This is Fred. Fred squinting in the bright sunshine waiting for me to take a photo, then the HURRY UP look, the I HAVE TO CLOSE MY EYES LOOK (put your sunglasses on Fred!) and the ahhhh, the sunglasses feel good look!

This is an older photo, I love his sunglasses now, he looks like a movie star – gotta try to get that shot! This photo was taken on Monhegan Island (Maine) – wish we were there now…

IT’S FRIDAY! Get out and enjoy!

Monhegan Sunset

Is there anything better than a sunset? Truly, we have to stop making dinner reservations during this time! I think next year we will eat pizza and take photos of the sunset! Ha ha… I run outside and snap a few as quick as I can. It’s difficult to stop, the light and colors change so quickly, illuminating yet another area in a more dramatic way then the first however many photos! I love this one with the cottage light on – adds so much charm.

This is Monhegan. Beautiful, charming and peaceful…

Lobster Traps – Monhegan, ME

I love how these lobster traps are stacked near the brewery on Monhegan. I realize they’re there for a reason and not just to look good, but… they form a wall of the coolest kind.

Monhegan, and even Maine in general is a lot like that. Items used for form and function and not necessarily to “look good”, but they do!

Laura B in Fog – Monhegan Boat Line

This is the Laura BMonhegan Boat Line – on a foggy Port Clyde (Maine) day. This boat is also known as the mailboat. This is one hard working boat – it delivers freight (you wouldn’t believe what all can fit on this amazing vessel) to Monhegan, and also picks up items from Monhegan. It’s the “early” boat – We recently came back from the island on this boat in fairly rough seas. It didn’t have a problem. These boats will run when others will not. So when Monhegan Boat Lines doesn’t run due to weather, you know it’s wicked! I’ve seen videos that have me scrambling for my Sea Bands, haha. A beautiful boat indeed!

Reaching To the Heavens

Here is just a small portion of Susan’s Flower Garden – Monhegan, Maine. My first thought when I saw these flowers was that they appear to be reaching for the heavens. Gloriously happy and bright, with the sun shining warmly upon them.

I wonder how many people have smiled (or have taken photos) as they’ve walked past these flowers?
