September in Maine – Photo from the Archives.

Monhegan, Maine

I took this photo our first year in Maine. September, 2006. We knew it would be beautiful, but whoa! We had no idea of how drop dead gorgeous it was. We visited Port Clyde, Maine – then took a boat to Monhegan Island for 5 nights – then back to mainland and headed home. There was so much to see it was mind blowing. This was 18 years ago… I’m sure this scene looks just like this today.

Prior to Maine we had been visiting San Francisco, CA. Walked until our legs about fell off. We also took public transportation to some of the farther locations – we got around. The weather was chilly, it was an adventure, but then as we were planning the next year we thought maybe east coast one year, west coast the next. Perfect plan.

We headed to Maine in 2006 and stayed on course, visiting about the same time of year (so much for east coast/west coast), meeting the same friends we had met the first few years adding new ones on as we could. It was the best of times. Tricky getting to from Charleston and eventually had so much going on that we had to change course on that long of a vacation (with an aging dog especially). Our last trip was 2016 I think, (nope, my husband just commented on this post, it was 2017 – I stand corrected, ha ha)? We’re still in touch with many of the people we used to meet with. Some have passed on but they’re there in memory. Special friends.

I remember being mesmerized by the beauty of Maine and the intense feeling that I did not want to leave. People seemed so real, so themselves. I’ve never been one for people who aren’t themselves. I’m not easily impressed by what you have, it’s the person you are. How you treat other people. To me, that is impressive. I love the people who live in Maine, their raw energy, their strong will and of course, their weather, ha ha.

Of course, we were only there in September, so it’s hard to say. When Fred retired we had always thought about moving to Maine, and then the entire world thought the same thing. Prices went up dramatically and in no longer seemed like a wise move. Although, the jury is always out, ha ha.

Good memories. Good food, good shopping. Love the blueberry pies, the fresh flowers at stands and you can just leave your money in the jar. By the time we would be heading home the leaves would start to change. How exciting. Then we would fly home back into the heat and humidity. I have to say, this September has made me think about Maine. The weather has (mostly) been uncharacteristically wonderful, lower humidity, sunny days, cooler nights. #whatsup No complaints from me! SC, the new north!

Where is a special place you’ve visited?

👩‍💻 Until next time… #inquiringmindswanttoknow
