This is one of my favorite photos of Fred and I. We were on the ferry to Sausalito, CA when this was taken (hence the windblown look). We had such a great time.
We always have a great time. It’s a blessing. I do not take our time together for granted. I know I am so fortunate to have met the man of my dreams.
No kinder man exists (for me), and I love him with all my heart.
HAPPY 23 YEARS FRED! Here’s to 23 more (and 23 more after that)… bless your heart ;)
What a stunning display of color, don’t you agree? Just look at these beets. I always thought beets tasted like dirt, I was so wrong. If you roast them, they have a sweetness to them that you will not believe! Give it a whirl!
You can roast them whole (scrub them good, cut off any leaves, but don’t peel). Then preheat oven to 375 F. Coat them with olive oil, then wrap in aluminum foil and place on a baking sheet. Roast 45-60 minutes (or until done). Remove from oven and let cool 10 minutes. Peel and slice into 1/4″-inch thick slices. Recipe: Bobbie Flay/Food Network
Ina Garten she peels, slices and roasts and then tops with orange juice, GOOGLE it! You won’t believe the wonderful combinations!
Several years ago we rented the coolest cottage in Port Clyde, Maine… The Periwinkle. Oh how I love that cottage. So cool, it was like a movie set inside. Very rustic, which was part of the charm, a large roaring fireplace and just steps from the ocean.
It was only a short walk to the Port Clyde General Store or to Marshall Point Lighthouse. I would like to live there, ha ha… Wouldn’t we all?
My mom and dad joined us for their 50th wedding Anniversary that year – way to go mom and dad! There aren’t a lot of people who can say that these days. I took this photo on that visit! I love it! So this year is their 57th Anniversary!! Woohoo, you guys are the best!
Today is also my sister’s birthday, Bridget Jennings… Happy birthday to you! Make it a special day – you certainly deserve it!
Enjoy your birthday! Wish you were here to celebrate!
Isn’t this the most stunning display of purple that you have ever seen? This is in a friends garden. She didn’t know it was going to bloom. The plant alone is so cool looking and then *poof*…
Artichoke bloom!
I love the purple against that fabulous green, here’s another perspective…
Be dazzled by the little things in life! Catch you back here tomorrow!
Hey! I’m Charlie! Giving the human the day off… sharing a few of my favorite things with you… she’ll be back tomorrow!
I love grabbing the humans socks… gets them all riled up. They chase me around and eventually I end up with a treat (carrot or frozen green bean). It’s taken several years, but I think I have them trained…
I love to feel the wind in my hair! Someone is always threatening to make me wear Doggles!
I love a good sprinkler! There is nothing better than passing a house with a sprinkler while on my morning walk! I dive right in, get soaking wet, ahhh, it makes me smile! Also love when the humans water the grass – they laugh at me!
Hee, hee… have I got her trained or what? She makes my healthy treats look fancy (well, sometimes)… two of my favorites: Pumpkin and whole grain pasta. She’s a little stingy with the pasta, but I’ll take what I can get!
Friend or foe? I’m not really sure. They come and visit (or torture?) me by sitting on the windowsill!
Of course! What do you expect? I am a dog, hee hee…
SURPRISE CHARLIE! It’s me! The human… and you thought I forgot… Happy 6th Birthday!! xxoxoxoxoxox, love us!
Lucky you! You have me as the guest blogger for the weekend! Tomorrow is a special day… tomorrow, I’m going to share a few of my favorite things with you!
Hee hee! I know you can’t wait! Have a great Saturday and I’ll see you back here tomorrow!
The human one will be back on Monday! She made me write that… CHARLIE!
Fred and I have started doing something over the past few years… it might be odd, but we like it… we’re removed some paintings from their frames. Not that the frames were bad, it’s just that we have so many paintings, and after a while it seems like you’re looking at so many frames it becomes distracting. We’ve taken a few paintings out of frames and have hung just the canvas over the years, and love it.
On left wall from top to bottom: Tim Bell, Marc Hanson, Dan Corey
On wall in front of you starting at top left and going clockwise: David Kasman, Marlee Brown, Don Stone and Ted Tihansky
Nothing like great memories, and each and every one of our paintings have just that!
Happy 4th of July, or more appropriately – Happy Independence Day! How many of you remember the words to the national anthem?
If you’re a little rusty, this is for you! Enjoy your day and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow!
Star Spangled Banner
O say can you see,
by the dawn’s early light,
what so proudly we hailed
at the twilight’s last gleaming,
whose broad stripes and bright stars,
through the perilous fight,
o’er the ramparts we watched,
were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare,
the bombs bursting in air,
gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there.
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
o’er the land of the free
and the home of the brave?
O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand between their loved homes and the war’s desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, and this be our motto, “In God we trust.” And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Peaceful, huh? The fog rolled in, and suddenly the beautiful view on the St. Clair River (in Michigan) was g-o-n-e ! But not for long. Fog is like that, which is amazing to watch. We really noticed it when we were in Maine the first time. Sitting by the harbor having dinner outside with another island in full view, suddenly *POOF* the island was gone, then the water was gone and all you saw was fog. Sudden.
I love weather, so I’m always happy when there is something different (anything!)… weather that stays the same gets boring ;)
Good photo dad (I cannot take credit for this one)!
Catch you back here tomorrow!
You may have noticed I have been posting photos this week – back to normal posting next week! b.
Years ago we rented the most wonderful cottage in Port Clyde, Maine. It was situated on the ocean, actually, rather close to the ocean. There were several cairns (sets of rocks stacked high) – I think they’re so peaceful. Some people used them as markers since way back in time. On the cottage porch railing they just looked so nice. They calm your thoughts… or perhaps that was the ocean. I want to go back, and never leave. That cottage is no longer available to rent. We feel fortunate to have rented it a few times. It was like a movie set… stunning, especially the time spent around the wonderful fireplace! It was a rustic cottage (no heat), and just a short walk to Marshall Point Lighthouse or the Port Clyde General Store!
If you build some of these along the coast, or anywhere else, be sure to knock them down after you’ve enjoyed them… part of the LEAVE NO TRACE movement to leave nature as it is, and to have only the true trail markers left behind…

Monhegan, Maine. The most wonderful place in the world! Beauty as far as the eye can see. Good friends from years past. Hiking trails that lead you to the most remarkable areas. I could take photos there forever!
If you haven’t been there before, click on the links for more info… the Island Inn is our “home away from home” (I like to call it)… there is something familiar and wonderful about it. It’s filled with wonderful memories, and memories still to be made, more people to meet and food that I dream about until the next year!
Usually on Monday’s I post a Featured Artist, that will continue next week – This week I am posting photos! Enjoy!
Tragedy strikes.Lives are lost. The community pulled together. I am so proud to live in Charleston, SC. An event that could have divided our city has instead made it stronger. I have seen a difference in the way people treat each other, and it is absolutely amazing! Our hearts all break for the friends and families who lost loved ones. The fact that it happened in a church just made it more horrific. These will not be easy times for the families, the church, the community, but we need to continue to pull together and be there for each other… Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.
*If you cannot help financially, just keep on with your thoughts and prayers!
Thank YOU!

See how one small change can make such a difference? This slipcover was made by Cheryl Arnold from The Slipcover Shop, her slipcovers are always beautiful, fit perfectly and she makes the process so convenient!
Just look at what a transformation these slipcovers make! (I’m going backwards here, you’ll see the “before” at the end of this post)… This is the latest slipcover, we wanted no pleats, and just plain white cotton duck fabric. It washes and dries like a dream! Simple too, no loading up your car and dragging a chair (or worse yet, a sofa!) somewhere! In most cases, Cheryl orders the fabric, once it comes in, she comes to your house, cuts out the slipcover (which amazes me!), then takes the fabric home and a week or so later, brings you back a slipcover. So the chair never left the house!
If you have a sofa or chair that is still in good condition, but you think needs an update, check out a slipcover. How can you beat it? Throw it in the washer/dryer – it’s great!
Slipcover made years ago…
We had this slipcover made years ago (10+), saw one similar in a magazine and showed it to Cheryl. We bought the fabric at ABC Carpet and Home when we were in New York City – what a great place! Cheryl made the slipcover and W O W ! What a difference it made… you’ll see why…
“BEFORE”
Here is the original chair. The fabric is in good shape, but didn’t go with our furnishings – but all that changed! If you need a slipcover, or pillows, I highly suggest Cheryl. We love it! She has also made us covers for pillows and cushions and even a dog bed! The cotton duck is amazing stuff, and the slipcover truly transformed this chair!
Here’s her card – Highly Recommend!!
UPDATE: Had a question about the weight of the fabric, trying to decide between 9oz or 14oz – I asked Cheryl, and she said that our fabric is 10oz. She said 10-12oz. would be nice. 9 oz. is a little light in her opinion and 14oz is too heavy. She does prewash the fabric. Hope that helps! I love our fabric, it’s perfect!
This is the perfect painting for Flag Day! Painting by the uber talented John Matthew Moore! Nicest guy on the planet and such a fabulous artist! Check him out if you haven’t already!
