This is the Ribaut Square (C0557) house plan by Allison Ramsey Architects. This plan is 2155 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. I haven’t featured a plan like this, because these types of plans don’t normally catch my attention, but… this one did. It is masterfully laid out, check it out…

A 10′ deep porch. Nice! So very nice! Master bedroom and bath separate from the rest of the house… very nice! Laundry in close proximity to master… a big plus! Then you have the living space, open, but not too open…  So nice!

Two bedrooms upstairs, (perfect for guests!), with walk in closets, bathrooms and a sitting area, not to mention that fabulous porch! Nice to give guests their own space! Caution: with this plan, guests may never leave, ha ha… I wouldn’t want to!

I really like this plan, and am so happy I stumbled upon it!

House Plan: Snead’s Ferry by Allison Ramsey Architects

Sneads Ferry C0574 by Allison Ramsey Architects
Snead’s Ferry C0574 by Allison Ramsey Architects

Allison Ramsey Architects – always doing something that makes great sense. Snead’s Ferry (C0574) is a house you can grow in to, or not if you choose not to. This plan is 2623 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms that also leaves room for a future second floor with 844 additional square feet. Pretty cool, eh? Are you trying to think of a scenario where you might need additional space (like a spare living room?), say your children are now teenagers and want their own space for watching TV/playing video games, etc. (or more likely YOU would like your space!), tada, that spare living room comes in handy. Or say one of you loves sports and the other doesn’t… two living rooms are essential, ha ha…

Sneads Ferry C0574 by Allison Ramsey Architects - Main Floor

This plan is quite amazing. I like that the living room isn’t right on the front of the house, it’s set back aways, more private and cozy. The open kitchen, living, dining space works nicely. If you have the spare rooms for guests, it’s nice that they’re tucked away on the other side of the house, so they have their privacy. A great screened porch off the living room is the icing on the cake. I love, love, love when I can open windows and let the fresh air in, woohoo!

Hot tip: Easiest Way to Cut Grape Tomatoes Quickly!

IMG_1208

I saw a video on this… and had long since forgotten about it. The other day I was making a fabulous cold med pasta salad, and the pasta was almost done, I had 3 minutes to wash and cut a package of grape tomatoes in half. Then I remembered “the trick”, I wasn’t sure if it would work, but I thought I would give it a whirl, because in this recipe the hot pasta sits on top of the cool tomatoes which softens them a bit and makes them really nice. I made it with time to spare!

The trick… A SERRATED KNIFE and two lids to plastic containers. I wouldn’t even attempt this with a regular knife, none of mine would be even close to being sharp enough!

Step one:

IMG_1202

I could have done it even quicker if I would have used a larger lid, but in my haste, I found two this size, so it worked great!

Set the lid down on the counter, RIM SIDE UP. Fit as many tomatoes as possible, all in one layer.

Step Two:

IMG_1203

Now put the other lid on top of the tomatoes, RIM SIDE DOWN so it holds them all in nice and cozy…

IMG_1205

Now use your serrated knife, and while holding your hand flat and lightly pressing down on the tomatoes slice back and forth until the knife gets through all the tomatoes, this step takes no time at all! Good grief, who’s meaty hand is that??? Eeek.

IMG_1206

Tada! Repeat as many times as you need to! Woohoo! I remembered this FINALLY, and I certainly won’t forget it!

Moser Design Group has some fabulous house plans. If you aren’t familiar with them, they are located in Beaufort, SC – they have their plans online and the site is easy to navigate. I selected one that I really like. It’s 1,693 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The ceiling height downstairs is an impressive 10′, while upstairs the ceiling height is 8’6″. I love the bungalow cottage look of this house. The fabulous porch really makes it! What you don’t see is a screened porch around back… very nice!

This is an open plan with the living/dining all in one room, which would work perfectly for us! The kitchen is an impressive 12’x13′ – I cannot imagine! What a treat to have a screened porch off the kitchen. It would be nice to be able to open that door while you’re cooking in the cooler months!

Can I say… I love storage? Ok. I LOVE STORAGE! And there is plenty of it fit into this house plan! I’m not a packrat by any means, but it’s nice to have a place to put certain things like Christmas decorations, out of season clothing, or things that you use on occasion (luggage, etc).

Circa Lighting and a gorgeous floor lamp!

DSCN2988

Circa Lighting. Fabulous. On trend. It’s nice to have a place here in Charleston to look for lighting and find something every single time. It simply is the best of the best. Inexpensive is probably not a word used to describe Circa, but quality definitely is! Keep an eye out, they do have sales on occasion. Lighting makes a room. It’s so important. More than for the light, which we need, but the look of the lighting makes all the difference! The staff here is knowledgable and helpful. Check them out if you’re in town, you won’t be sorry. (Psssst: they ship… and it’s free, now that IS a deal!).

Image: CircaLighting.com

When my parents were in town they were looking for a light to go beside a chair. Mostly for reading. This is what they ordered and they couldn’t be happier. This lamp has a dimmer switch, so you can turn it down very low, or up as bright as you may need. It’s one gorgeous floor lamp! This one is called the STUDIO ADJUSTABLE LIGHT FLOOR LAMP – Stock # 91025 and it comes in a variety of finishes.

Check it out if you get a chance and I’ll  catch you back here tomorrow!

How to clean a coffee thermos – the black coffee residue *POOF* – G O N E !

Well earned coffee residue!
Well earned coffee residue!

I tend to be persnickety about my coffee. I don’t like it weak and I don’t like it old… I’m ok if it’s hot or not, but old coffee (you know, when you put cream in and it turns gray, eeeeeek!). I will avoid that like the plague. So every morning when the coffee finishes brewing, I pour it into a thermos (that has been preheated with boiling water). Now, you would think, that adding boiling water day after day would keep coffee from sticking to the sides of the thermos, wouldn’t you?

Well one morning, I went to rinse my thermos and it poured a ton of what looked like coffee grounds into the sink. WHAT?!?!?! So I put boiling water and soap and everything else I could try… nothing worked. It’s a tall narrow thermos, so there is no way to reach down into it. Haven’t I read something about baking soda I thought to myself? Hmmm,, well, let’s see… add boiling water about 3/4 full, because I was unsure what would happen once I added baking soda… I added 2 Tablespoons of baking soda and it start to expand. I put the top on and gave it a GENTLE SHAKE (with a towel over the top, just because I could almost feel the pressure, which kind of scared me…).  I couldn’t easily unscrew the top…. hmmm, OK, better wait until it calms down before I try again. I left it alone for 4-5 hours, maybe even longer than that. When I poured it out, it looked like the strongest coffee on the planet. At first I thought AHHHHH! Pouring out good coffee??  Nope, all the black stuff on the sides of the thermos that build up over time… are now… tada….

G O N E ! ! !

Like brand new!!
Like brand new!!

Just BE CAREFUL with the boiling water! I just gave this a whirl and it worked, but I’m no expert! Did I just get lucky this one time?

Houseplan: The Spartina Cottage by Allison Ramsey Architects!

Spartina Cottage designed by Allison Ramsey Architects (C0511)
Spartina Cottage designed by Allison Ramsey Architects (C0511)

Well, it’s officially summer in the South and it’s hot, hot, hot… It would be nice to have a break from the sun (something you would never hear me say in January/February). The porches on this house would really help keep that stifling heat at bay, at least keep the sun from shining directly in the windows! The Spartina Cottage is a great plan by Allison Ramsey Architects. It measures about 1,663 square feet of living space with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. A great house for two people or a small family!

Let’s look further…

Spartina Cottage designed by Allison Ramsey Architects

Great porches on both the back and the front of the house = FABULOUS! Bedrooms on the left, living space on the right, and bathrooms in the center, which comes in handy for a tornado watch! I would probably make “Bedroom Two” a study, a place to read and relax… It’s a great smaller plan, which I happen to like. When Fred retires we don’t want big…

What are your thoughts on this plan?  What kind of plan are you on the lookout for? I’m happy to help you look! Big, small, cottage, modern, traditional, under 2,000, over 3,000 square feet?? Let me know!

IMG_1082

Bright and happy aren’t they? My mother-in-law picked these for me, I put them in a glass of water, and toted them around the house snapping photos and they all turned out gorgeously! This one has pretty bright sun hitting it, but I love how the concrete gives that cool background with the sharpness from the shadow…

These are Black Eyed Susan’s and they grow wild in various areas… my husband calls them “Black Eyed Susie’s” and for some reason that makes me laugh every time he says it. Ahhh, its the little things! Have a wonderful week and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow!

The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From the Tree….

IMG_1106

You’ve heard the expression “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” meaning that you are a lot like your parents, whether you like it or not… ha ha… It’s so true, I’m like my mom in so many ways, but I’m also like my dad…

We love to collect art supplies, but are more hesitant to use them… sigh…

Technology… He was the first to get a digital camera, iPad and iPhone! It’s not easy keeping up with him!

Ahhh, technology… LOVE IT! HATE IT! Love it when it’s working… hate it when it’s not! It would be good if one of us were proficient, but we end up figuring things out.

So far.

Love to cook… although he likes more complicated recipes than I do… I tend to go for the quicker ones.

Maine… we all have a love for Maine. What’s not to love?

I am so fortunate/blessed/lucky/happy to have such a cool dad! Hey dad, just want you to know you are the best!!

Fred has his own apple doesn’t fall far from the tree story going on… he is so much like both of his parents…

His dad can fix anything, and now, so can Fred, he had a good teacher!

He shares a love of the outdoors, camping growing up, horses, time on a farm with his grandparents. Oh yeah, lots of similarities.

It’s funny how when you’re young you want to be DIFFERENT than your parents, then as you get old (and “old” is much, much older than what you first perceived it to be) you see how similar you are, and you know that it’s a good thing!

Think about your  own “Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” story…
