View from the Dining Room of the Island Inn (Monhegan) – my favorite place!

Island Inn Monhegan | ArtFoodHome.com | barbara stroud

I love this view! Can it be any more charming or scenic? This is the view from our table at the Island Inn Dining Room… a wonderful place to be. If you haven’t visited Monhegan before, you may want to add it to your bucket list. The food served in the dining room is some of the best on the planet! Truly! The Island Inn is a fabulous place to stay while you’re on the island.

It just doesn’t get better!

Monhegan Potato Salad (no mayo!) – BEST EVER!

Monhegan Potato Salad - ArtFoodHome.com

This is the freshest, tastiest, most wonderful potato salad in the entire world! Use fresh tomatoes when possible – these were a “tomato medley” from Whole Foods…

I call it “Monhegan” Potato Salad, because that’s where I was the first time I tasted potato salad minus mayo AND the freshest ingredients imaginable! This recipe is inspired by a true friend, [Thank you Jenn :)] She went to the Farmer’s Market that day, bought the best veggies and whipped this up (along with LOBSTER!)… what a treat!

This is how I remember it, and when I tasted it, whew! It was amazing! This is a true favorite! I will never make potato salad with mayo again! I was never even big on mayo in the first place, but this… it’s an entirely different beast!

Monhegan Potato Salad – Pretty Bowl from West Elm, Charleston, SC

MONHEGAN POTATO SALAD – Serves 2

Ingredients

2 Red potatoes (more if they are small)

Onion (sweet or red, whatever you like), chopped or minced

Grape or cherry tomatoes – good sweet ones! I used 1/2 container… cut in half or thirds

Extra Virgin Olive Oil – I used about 8-9 quick swirls around the bowl, you can always add more.

Salt, Pepper, Dill (I use a lot of dill)

Arugula, Kale or Spinach chopped (fresh) – or whatever green(s) you like!

Directions

You can boil your potatoes until you they are barely tender when you pierce them with a fork, or you can do what I did (I’m always in a hurry). I took 2 red potatoes and washed them, then cut into bite size pieces. I spread on a plate and covered with another plate, and I (shhhhhh!) MICROWAVED THEM! (Truly, I am not a microwave cook, but needed to whip this up in the time it takes a hamburger to come off the grill, so boiling wasn’t an option, however, if you can plan ahead…).

In a large bowl, add the olive oil, tomatoes, onion, salt, pepper and dill. Mix it together and then add the potatoes (they can still be warm). Stir to coat.

Chop some arugula or spinach, however much you like, and add that to the bowl, tossing to coat.

Taste and season if necessary.

I’m making this again in a few minutes! Too good for words!

Peace.

Monhegan, Maine | ArtFoodHome.com

Monhegan Island in the fall. Perfection. Peace. Solitude. I love how there is barely a distinction between the sky and the horizon. It makes the ocean seem even more vast than it is!

If you ever get a chance to make it to the island, I would highly recommend it! There are many wonderful places to stay, including the Island Inn (fabulous dining room as well!).

The Island House – Mackinac Island, MI

The Island House - Mackinac Island, MI |ArtFoodHome.com

I’m an island girl. I am fond of islands. Mainly where the weather is cool and there is a gorgeous landscape to be seen. Being at the Island House on Mackinac Island, MI where you can get up early, sit out on the porch in the dark cool weather sipping your hot coffee. It’s pure heaven to me! Then inside for a delightful breakfast and out to face the day! We haven’t been in some time… am looking forward to going back one day soon! The Island House is the white beautiful building with the reddish roof in this photo. It’s been around since 1852. I remember it when before it had air conditioning or an elevator, but it now has both! If you ever find yourself looking for a unique destination, Mackinac Island is beautiful, especially the back side of the island (bike rentals are available).

We have ours… do you have yours? Island Inn Monhegan…

ArtFoodHome.com | barbara stroudI love January! It’s when the letters confirming your reservation at the Island Inn are received. Yay! It gives you something to look forward to for the upcoming months. What could possibly be better than that? If you haven’t made your reservations yet, I would give them a call tout de suite (immediately)! The inn fills up quickly, so be sure to have your room reserved!

The Island Inn located on Monhegan Island, Maine is such an amazing place to stay. It’s been around since 1907 and has withstood the test of time. (Part of the inn has been around since 1816 when it was known as the Pink House, then it was added on to – currently there are 32 guest rooms). The rooms are wonderful (and very clean!), whether you have a meadow view or ocean view, they’re both amazing! The meadow view room sees a sunrise, and the ocean view, well, you can guess what they see!

Check out their website – so much great info and beautiful photos!

monhegan… what memories…

Fred (& Ella Pickle) on Monhegan (Maine)
Fred (& Ella Pickle) on Monhegan (Maine)

Some of the best memories are of times spent taking in nature’s beauty. Being in a splendid location with people who are near and dear to your heart. It gives you a chance to recharge from the hectic normal days of life.

I swear you can find some of the most peaceful spots on the island of Monhegan. This is one of them. A place to sit and just be. Sit and watch the birds. Here, Fred is joined by a friends dog, Ella Pickle. She’s so sweet, everyone on the island loves her. What a great place to be a dog, can you imagine?

Looking forward to sitting here in this spot again!

Remember to set your clocks BACK one hour tonight before you go to bed! (If you go to bed at 10, set your clocks back to 9)

We’re GAINING an hour of sleep tonight, woohoo! We should all wake up a little less puffy ;) – I usually change one clock in the morning, so I can remember to switch the rest of them at night… Then for weeks I will say to myself “but it’s really x:o’clock” ha ha… My goal… to not do that this year!

Have a great weekend! Catch you back here tomorrow!

View from Pulpit Rock on Monhegan. A friend told us how to get there. Wow, you could easily spend the day sitting on the rock staring out over the water! It was stunning and beautiful and was everything we had hoped it would be! If you make it to Monhegan, buy one of those trail maps. Check out the different places – each offers a view that is different, gorgeous and breathtaking!

Stairway to Heaven?

Stairway to Heaven?
Stairway to Heaven?

Well, this may not be the stairway to Heaven, but it sure feels like it! This is the boat ramp for the Laura B (Monhegan Boat Lines) – this, sadly, was our departure from the island. You can see the regal Island Inn at the end of the ramp (in the distance) with it’s flag flying. Oh how we love this place!

Good bye Heaven, hope to see you next year! Have a great weekend!

JAMBOREE with outstanding talent!

Jamboree

Monhegan Island, located ten miles off the coast of Maine. It’s a small island with the most creative, amazing people you will ever find. They find ways to entertain (other than TV, electronics, etc.) – This Jamboree was brilliant! Talent like I’ve not heard in a long time. It really is like life the way it should be!

Appreciate the little things in life, those little things are the best things!

Farmer’s Market… the island way!

Monhegan Farmers Market

I have never seen a fresher farmer’s market than the one I saw on Monhegan this year! They were literally picking veggies right before the market opened. The table was set up with beautiful displays. The veggies didn’t last long. *POOF* gone! What a treat!

Wherever you are, treat yourself to fresh fruits and veggies. Check out your local Farmer’s Market, or your local store that may carry local produce!

Monhegan: friends, new and old… and memories to last a lifetime!

Monhegan Sunset

Ok, we’re just back from a trip to Monhegan, so I need to catch up on a few things, and I thought I would share just a few photos this week of Monhegan, then I promise, I’ll be back to my normal posting!

This was taken during dinner (sorry Fred!), grabbed my phone and headed outside to get a few shots of the stunning sunset. Monhegan is situated across from another island, Manana. The light on the right is on the wharf (Monhegan). Lobster boats dot the coast.

This place is Heaven. Truly!

I was so happy to meet up with old friends, new friends and everyone in between! This was a super special trip. One I will always remember!

Island Inn on Monhegan… it just doesn’t get better than this!

Island Inn, Monhegan, Maine

Sitting majestically at the top of the hill is the Island Inn on Monhegan, Maine. It is such a wonderful place to stay. The people are fabulous, the food… divine, and the views… well, “out of this world” doesn’t even begin to cover it!

I would like to thank the Island Inn for a job well done. Every stay has been amazing, but this year everything seemed just a bit better. I am so grateful for our same friends that we met on the island years ago, for returning at the same time each year. How cool is that? (We need to come up with a name for ourselves!) We keep up with each other throughout the year, it’s quite amazing.

Monhegan is a place to forge strong bonds… I guess without TV, and places to go other than the church Jamboree, you spend time talking, sharing your life stories with others and become connected in a way far deeper than being home allows. Without work, and our day to day schedules to take away our attention, all of our attention is focused on the island, the people (and the food!)!

I am so grateful to have met a friend that will be in my life forever and ever… Fred and I met her through her brother who is no longer with us. While that is still hard to comprehend at times, the fact that she is there is just the coolest thing in the world and I am so grateful!

We were also able to spend a little time with a couple (and their adorable daughter) who works at the Island Inn and lives near us here in Charleston during the off season. They don’t get much spare time, so the fact that they shared it with us meant a lot! Looking forward to seeing everyone again soon!
