Rite of Spring by David Ahlsted
Rite of Spring by David Ahlsted

Spring is here. Just a few short days ago we went from winter to spring in the blink of an eye. And then there were more snow storms throughout the country. How crazy is that?

This painting, entitled Rite of Spring, by artist David Ahlsted is a welcome site for most of you who have endured mountains of snow and ice… not to mention the frigid cold temperatures. This painting is like a landscape and a still life all in one. And it’s happy… can you not feel the sun on your face? What a wonderful imagination, and a fabulous painting!

Check out David’s work, it’s so refreshing and different… wonderful in every way!

Read a blip about David from JerseyArts.com:

David Ahlsted is a realist painter who has lived and worked near the Atlantic Ocean in Southern New Jersey since 1976. He describes his work very succinctly by saying it is “content plus geometry, color, light and shadow”. With his representations of still – life, nautical and industrial scenes, and beach scenes Ahlsted thoughtfully explores abstraction, contrasts and sculptural elements in the everyday.

He received his MFA from Indiana University and presently, he is a tenured Professor of Arts at the Richard Stockton College of NJ. Ahlsted is credited with numerous solo exhibitions throughout the eastern United States, including major exhibitions in Philadelphia and New York City. He has participated in over 60 group exhibitions, including the New Jersey Arts Annual, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Aldrich Museum, and the Museum of the City of New York. In addition, he has completed two commissioned public art projects – six large scale paintings for the New Jersey State House Annex and seven large scale paintings for Rutgers University. His work is in the permanent collections of the Aldrich Museum, Glen Mede Trust, Master Card Corp., Noyes Museum, PepsiCo, Inc., Pew Charitable Trust and Rutgers University.  His work is represented by Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia.

I love Robin Cheers work. It is so fabulous. Nice and loose, with great brush strokes and color. I think this is a fabulous perspective, something different! Robin has a great blog, check it out! For several of these paintings Robin set her camera on a tripod atop the dining room table and set the timer… “Selfie’s” ha ha… I like her sense of humor. All are fabulous! I think Robin should paint more interiors… she hits it spot on. Makes it so interesting! I look forward to following Robin’s work for a long, long time!

Read a blip about Robin from her website

Texas-based painter, Robin Cheers’ gift is her ability to bring a magnifying glass to life’s simple moments. Her paintings encourage us to appreciate the extraordinary stories that are told in the most ordinary of circumstances.

“To discover and share the hidden treasures of everyday moments is the goal of my work. Light and gesture are my inspiration. I paint quickly – alla prima – because its the most instinctive way for me to work and capture that moment of pure inspiration. My paintings have become a visual diary of  my life. In the summer, I turn to paintings of the beach, farm markets, horse shows and  swimming holes. Other seasons find me in the city, frequenting coffee houses and museums, and gathering material and inspiration from each stop along the way.”

Robin’s subject matter invites people to stop and explore, while painterly brushwork speaks to the fleeting moments she captures on canvas. Working from sketches, paint studies and photos, she paints with immediacy, preferring to finish a painting in one session, leaving out details and allowing the viewer to interpret the story to their own ends.

Born in Ohio in 1969, her family moved quite often while Robin was growing up; creative play and art helped her adjust to new situations. Robin graduated in 1991 from Virginia Tech where she studied public relations and graphic arts – balancing the practical with the creative. She worked as a graphic artist and web designer in the years following college, moving once more to her current home in Austin in 1994. She studied painting at night in intensive classes with Elizabeth Locke until 2001 when she became a full time fine artist. Studies with Kim English, Peggi Kroll Roberts and Ken Auster, as well as studying the impressionist masters from long ago, have continued to inform her work.

Sky Show by Derek Davis
Sky Show by Derek Davis

This is the painting that caught my eye… I was perusing Facebook… and came upon this! I love these trees, and this sky… LOVE IT! The clouds just grab you and pull you right in… Very nice indeed!

Read more about Derek on his website:

Derek Davis is a second generation artist for which painting is a process of self discovery and a means of expressing appreciation of the world around him. Searching for the poetry of the moment and reaching to express that with paint is sincerely gratifying and challenging to Derek. Although self taught, he has learned from many artists including his parents, Rink and Marilyn, and other artists such as Orlin Helgoe, Ivan Morrison, Leroy Greene, Andrew Wyeth, N.C. Wyeth, Jeanne Dobie, Edgar Whitney, Edgar Payne, Richard Schmid, Tony Couch, Skip Lawrence, Charles Reid, Betty Edwards, Ted Goerschner, Robert Henri, Nicolai Fechin and Francis Lee Jaques.

As a child in his father’s studio, Derek was exposed to a variety of art and artists. Later in life, his mother’s forays outside with an easel at her side showed him about the possibility of outdoor painting. These influences and his brother Brett introducing him to the wonder of the outdoors combined to direct his lifes choices.  At the age of nineteen, Derek decided to learn to draw and paint.

While working and raising a family and with books as his constant companions, Derek spent 25 years developing his drawing and then painting skills. He was joyfully oblivious to the existing commercial art world and worked diligantly in private to grow as an artist.  He worked in the traditional manner of sketching from life and painting from these sketches in the studio. During this “school” period, Derek was able to study the intricasies of painting including design, composition and color usage.

“with every piece I continue to learn, with humility I push paint and with every step I am learning to value the process of creating and understanding ‘ becoming an artist ‘ is a journey and not a destination.”

In 2007, he decided it was time to begin to quietly emerge from this self imposed time of learning.

On a chance encounter during his first showing of works, he met Joe Paquet. This encounter and the conversations that would follow led to Derek choosing to focus on painting on location outdoors or”enpleinaire”. Still having occasional studio time for larger works, figure/portrait painting and still-lifes, Derek finds the challenges and joys of outdoor painting to be an exhilirating painting experience.

“I feel there is something about being outside that’s good for the inside of a person…”

Derek paints primarily in oil or watercolor from life and is an active teacher at his studio in St. Paul, Mn. as well as workshops abroad. Derek Davis is a former president and member of the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota as well as a member of the American Impressionist Society.

Mending by Tom Browning
14×18 Oil – Available at Insight Gallery

Tom Browning has amazing paintings, and the more you look at his website the more you find. This painting above “Mending” is quite splendid, isn’t it? I love the warm glow of the fire reflected on the woman. She looks so content. It looks cold outside, but looks so nice inside. Wonderful!

Tom paints mainly western paintings. Fabulous cowboys – truly amazing, and worth checking out! One thing I discovered was that Tom Browning is THE Santa painter! This man’s depiction of Santa Claus is so wonderful. It brings back every memory of Santa that you ever had! The images are so wonderful, warm and just like you remember from your youth! Check out the Santa’s! He also sells them in various formats!

Read a blip about Tom from the Insight Gallery website:

2009 was a big year for Tom. In January the mural (The Adoration of the Christ Child) for St. Mary’s in Boise, Idaho was installed. In June he was awarded the prestigious Prix de West Award at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum for ‘Dawn of a New Day’. In October he was elected into the COWBOY ARTISTS OF AMERICA (CAA).Born in Ontario, Oregon in 1949, Tom Browning has been painting professionally since 1972. Starting out with wildlife as a choice of subject matter, Tom worked primarily in black and white using a medium known as scratchboard. This gave his work an appearance of laborious detail, however, his technique permitted him to become quite prolific and at the same time learn the most important concept of values. Learning to properly see values and creating such a convincing sense of light have been instrumental to Browning’s success.

Now working primarily in oils, Tom’s subject matter takes in a wide scope that knows no boundaries. Still life and figures, however, make up the majority of his work, and are always the subjects in his workshops that he teaches around the country each year. And of course teaching how to see values is Tom’s main focus during these seminars. In 1994 Tom wrote an instructional book for Northlight entitled Timeless Techniques for Better Oil Paintings which was acclaimed by many schools and painting students as one of the best ever out on the market.

Since becoming a member of the Northwest Rendezvous Group in 1986, Browning has been a four time recipient of judges’ merit awards, and in 1994 received an Award of Excellence from the NWR Group. Tom is a member of the Portrait Painters Society of America, which chose him as a finalist in a 2000 competition in New York City, and has been a guest artist’s at the National Academy of Western Art and the Plein Air Painters of America. He currently shows with Wilcox Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming, and Lahaina Galleries in Bend, Oregon. He also participates in the Prix de West at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and Quest for the West at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian & Western Art in Indianapolis. His work can also be seen in Settler’s West Gallery in Tuscon, Arizona.

For twenty-two years Tom and his wife Joyce owned and operated a publishing business of the Tom Browning Collection a decorator print and greeting card business that carved a permanent niche in the gift market. Tom’s unique Santa designs along with his painting style earned him the reputation in the industry as the premiere Santa painter in the country. In 1997 a successful children’s book, Santa’s Time Off was published using Tom’s Santa’s as the illustrations. Over the years these wonderful images of Santa have found their way onto numerous manufactured products, and for more than fifteen years have been among the top selling designs in clothtique figurines by Possible Dreams.

Sherrie Russ Levine was born in Georgetown, South Carolina and attended Ringling School of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida where she received her degree in graphic design and illustration. After graduating she worked in advertising agencies and corporate art departments in Atlanta, Georgia for 10 years before making Nashville, Tennessee her home. Since 1995 she has focused her energy on paintings in oil and has shown in galleries and juried shows throughout the United States.

She often travels to find new inspiration and paints en plein air when on location, or always from life in the studio.

Levine’s paintings are gaining national recognition in private collections and painting competitions. Her painting “Capitalizing on Sunshine” has become a part of the Tennessee State Museum’s Permanent Collection. She has continued her studies of painting under the tutelage of renowned artists Barbara Flowers, CW Mundy, Kim English, Lori Putnam and Scott Christensen whom are among the most influential in her work.

Anton Pavlenko has some beautiful paintings on his website. Many are sold… and I do try to select work that is still available, which (as I write this) Pacific Reflections is available, but not sure for how long. I love the shadows and reflections in the water. Anton is not afraid to apply paint. I love the texture and the wonderful warmth that comes from this painting.

Read a blip about Anton from his website:

STATEMENT

When approaching a painting, I always strive to work from a state of flow; where every stroke is swift and effortless. This usually happens when I’m genuinely captivated by a scene and give a quick and intuitive response. For this reason, I work from direct observation and prefer to paint alone where I’m left with my thoughts, my paints and the landscape before me.

BIOGRAPHY

I was born in Ukraine in 1984 and have always felt artistically inclined since childhood. As a teenager, I took up oils and taught myself to paint by reproducing works of the old masters I admired. Though I was serious about my painting, I only considered becoming a full-time artist after a 7 year pursuit of a ‘real’ occupation after high school. Shortly after marrying the love of my life, Anna, the artist within me emerged once again. Today I live in Portland, OR and am inspired by the beautiful landscapes I see all throughout the world.

Anton has some events coming up for 2014, so be sure to check them out!

Thanks to artist Eric Bowman for listing “Friends and Inspirations” on his blog… a list of great website/blogs… it’s how I found Anton!

Memories of Monhegan…

Island Inn by Joe Fidler

Island Inn. Monhegan Island. Maine. Vacation. Heaven! Wow, back in 2009 my mom and dad, Fred and I rented a cottage in Port Clyde, then we came to Monhegan for a few nights. What a dream! My dad had recently had knee surgery, so those of you who have been to the island know what a challenge that can be. Right as you step off the boat you have a rather steep hill to climb. He did it, no problem. (Dad, you were a sport. You had to pass on the hike through Cathedral Woods, but you stayed mighty busy. I’ve told you all about a sketch book that he surprised me with. Full of fabulous ink/watercolor sketches of our time on Monhegan and a few other things. I cherish that book!

Joe Fidler – Monhegan Island

The island is such a fabulous place to just be… to do what you want to do… you see all kinds of people, lots of artists and bird watchers. You meet the most interesting people and life long friends on the island.

Sheila Fidler hiking on Monhegan…

This is the day we went hiking. Mom found a great walking stick… part way through Cathedral Woods she said, whew! That’s far enough… Noooo Mom!! You have to see the “reward”… the peacefulness of Cathedral Woods cannot be matched anywhere in my opinion. But when you get through that trail to Squeaker Cove your jaw drops. Wow! Mom was thrilled that she went the entire way! The beauty is breathtaking!

Artist & Craftsman Supply – what a pleasure to stroll through this store. Charleston has such a unique art store, full of knowledgable staff, GREAT prices and such a wide array of choices. The only thing there isn’t… parking. They did have a few spots that they were leasing for customers, but something is being built/or changed behind that building and everything is dug up. So… right now there is only meter parking, which isn’t so bad ( and it’s FREE on Sunday). If by chance you have some big items you can either go in/call, shop, pay, and then drive up and someone in the store will run the items to you (call first to be sure they aren’t too busy). They’re doing their best to make it as easy as possible for you to shop. So if you’re in Charleston, SC check them out.
