View from the lighthouse on Monhegan Island…

IMG_4302

This is a view from the lighthouse on Monhegan, Maine.. A foggy day that was just spectacular. This proves you don’t always need the sun shining. Absolutely beautiful!

This is one of those times I didn’t have my camera, so this is with my phone, it did pretty well considering the distance. You get an idea of the magnitude of this island. The other island you see is Manana Island.

Posting a week of photos, after all this rain, flooding etc. that Charleston experienced I am behind. Very behind. Back to normal posting next week!

Workhorse – Port Clyde, Maine

DSCN3722

This boat looks like a real workhorse. Fishing can be dangerous and physically very difficult. When their boats are in the harbor they are beautiful. Not beautiful in a sparkly kind of way, more like natural beauty…

Raspberry Island!

DSCN3717

View of Raspberry Island from Port Clyde, Maine. I love the peacefulness of this area. It feels like heaven to me!

There is a wonderful painting of Raspberry Island by artist Jerry Weiss that we ran across in Charleston, SC one day! It was an art gallery (no longer in Charleston), and they had it on an easel near the door. We walked by and Fred spotted it right away.

Charlie!

DSCN4102

What do you do when you’re in the house for many days with wicked weather outside? Play with your camera settings of course! I tried to figure out how to use the manual setting on my camera, not sure that I did. Some photos turned out, some didn’t. I did find that I could change a setting to MACRO to photograph close up (like the shots for food, that I have been  using my phone for)! How exciting to figure out at least something.

Charlie was getting annoyed with being the subject of my photo ;) ha ha…

I write my posts ahead of time and schedule them to publish. As I write this we have had much rain (near 20″), flooding on nearby streets, streets closed in most directions and just a general mess. This morning we woke to wind (oh no!), hoping the trees will be OK, they are so drenched that they easily uproot during these conditions. I need a week to catch up! Power was flickering on and off, so we had the computer shut down. Back to normal next week!

You know it’s fall when…

IMG_4094

You know fall is in the air when you start seeing mums for sale. Costco has huge pots of them. I don’t usually buy them because it doesn’t seem like they last long here in Charleston. When we were in Maine, The Island Inn (Monhegan) was planting flowers, mums and some other various plants and they were just beautiful. I loved the color of their mums, not yellow, more of a pinky color, just beautiful!

I am thrilled that cooler air is upon us! Catch you back here tomorrow!

Featured Artist: Jesse Powell!

The Isthmus by Jesse Powell

The Isthmus by Jesse Powell  –  16×20 Oil

Jesse Powell. Wow. His paintings are amazing. Those subtle strokes that depict sun or shade bring his paintings to life. The water in this particular painting drew me in, it’s so clean, so beautiful with the mountain in the distance, the shadows of the tree, and the colors. Gorgeous!

Be sure to check out other paintings of Jesse’s! Showing you one doesn’t begin to cover his collection! Click here to see his upcoming events!

Read a bit about Jesse, from his website:

Jesse Powell was born in 1977 in Los Angeles, California. He has lived most of his life on the California coast, where he has developed a deep attachment and respect for a rapidly disappearing natural landscape. A third generation artist, Jesse’s love for art stemmed at an early age, mostly from the influence of his father,  artist John Powell. He now resides in Carmel, Ca.

Jesse graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree in painting and drawing, and went on to study Russian Impressionism in the Republic of Georgia under the tutelage of Nicholai Dubovik, Ilya Yatsenko, and John Wurdeman. His education  continued with numerous trips to the Scottsdale Artist School to study with painters such as Matt Smith, George Strickland, and Kenn Backhaus, among others.

Jesse’s paintings have been exhibited in  numerous solo and group exhibitions, including shows at  The Laguna Art Museum, The Pasadena Museum of California History, The Pasadena Museum of California Art, and The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and the Autry National Center.    He is an artist member of the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society and a  Signature Member of the California Art Club and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.

Life the way it should be… not “perfect Maine”, just life, the way it should be…

mom hiking monhegan w stick 2009

Monhegan. Maine. Can’t get either place (Monhegan… or Maine) off of my mind. Of course I say that only being there in the fall. Never in the summer or winter… so, that’s like visiting Charleston when it’s not hot, humid and packed with people. I know that. But have you ever had a feeling that you were supposed to be somewhere? Where it was so hard to leave that it just didn’t feel right? That’s Maine for us. But our short time there gets us through. We aren’t talking “perfect Maine” that you see all over town, just real life Maine…  We feel fortunate to be able to keep in touch with the rest of our extended family that all feels the same way!

I have family that also feels that way. They love Maine just as much as we do. This is a photo of my mom hiking in Cathedral Woods (Monhegan) years ago. I love this photo! Well… today is my mom’s birthday, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM! Hop on a plane and come to Charleston, hee hee… we can celebrate! Have the best birthday ever!

Do you have a place that pulls you back time after time? Let me know!

Stamps from the machine at the post office… Yay USPS!

IMG_3772

I wrote a post several years ago about the stamps I purchased from the machine inside the post office. Wow, have things ever changed.

These are recent stamps from that very same machine. They don’t look like they’ve been printed in someone’s basement, ha ha… these look more like REAL stamps! Woohoo! Thought that post deserved an update ;)

On another note, can you believe it’s already October? Wow, time flies!

Sunset chasers…

Pemaquid area of Maine IMG_4646

When Fred and I were in Maine we saw some spectacular sunsets. Our last night we took a drive to Pemaquid Point area, saw the sky light up near the beach, BUT the sunset was around the bend…

So, we hopped in the car and off we went until we found it!

You’ve heard of STORM CHASERS, right? Those people that chase dangerous storms so they can video/photograph? Well, this is the watered down version… Fred and I are sunset chasers, ha ha… there is just nothing like a good sunset!
