Cool cabin… Monhegan (Maine)!

The Stanley Apartment - Monhegan | ArtFoodHome.com

This photo is from a while back, I love it. The door on the left is so striking against the gray weathered shingles and the window above with the flower – so sweet. Years ago a friend of ours rented this cottage. If you’re looking for a place of your own to rent while on Monhegan, there are many cottages to chose from. Plan ahead!

Check out the Stanley Apartment | Brackett Rentals website… great photos!

In a hurry for dinner? Here’s a trick!

Quick Dinner | ArtFoodHome.com

Whole Foods (and many other stores) sell their homemade pizza that you can take home and bake… we buy a small pizza and split it. It IS small, but if you buy the cheese pizza and add sliced mushrooms and/or veggies and a nice salad it fills you up! I just added a few handfuls of arugula, sliced cucumber, radish and a sprinkle of dill and olive oil! No bad ingredients, and it’s indulgent yet healthy!

We keep one in the freezer, take it out that morning, and it’s perfect!

What is a quick/healthy meal that you can whip up when things are busy?

Last Day of August… and one last hot tip…

Coffee Cubes | ArtFoodHome.com

Ahhh, coffee iced cubes. These things got us through the hot summer months! Take your leftover coffee and refrigerate it (and pour some in an ice cube tray and freeze to make cubes). What a refreshing drink, and the cubes don’t dilute the coffee.

WIN * WIN !

I am finding it hard to believe that it’s already the end of August. TIME FLIES! Frighteningly fast! Normally summer drags on with the heat and humidity. This year was much better! The mosquitoes weren’t as bad, which meant we could use the pool, that helps immensely! We also had to replace our unit (AC/Heat) and WOW is this one ever nice! It’s so quiet but pumps out the cool air! It’s been a pleasure! We can’t complain our other unit was 20++++

Enjoy your last day of August! Catch you back here tomorrow!

View from the Dining Room of the Island Inn (Monhegan) – my favorite place!

Island Inn Monhegan | ArtFoodHome.com | barbara stroud

I love this view! Can it be any more charming or scenic? This is the view from our table at the Island Inn Dining Room… a wonderful place to be. If you haven’t visited Monhegan before, you may want to add it to your bucket list. The food served in the dining room is some of the best on the planet! Truly! The Island Inn is a fabulous place to stay while you’re on the island.

It just doesn’t get better!

Low dew point and sunny skies = time to spend outdoors!

ArtFoodHome.com | barbara stroud | Charlie

We have had several weekends that have turned out to be so nice, warm but without the usual humidity that makes you stay indoors! We really enjoy our backyard during those days! Those are days to catch up on reading and spending time with Charlie… In this photo I ran in the house for something and he sat there patiently waiting. Notice he sits on the cushion and not the ground, sigh… You’ve trained us well Charlie!

Enjoy your weekend! Catch you back here tomorrow!

I do, I did, and I still do!

fred and barbara san fran 2005

This is one of my favorite photos of Fred and I. We were on the ferry to Sausalito, CA when this was taken (hence the windblown look). We had such a great time.

We always have a great time. It’s a blessing. I do not take our time together for granted. I know I am so fortunate to have met the man of my dreams.

No kinder man exists (for me), and I love him with all my heart.

HAPPY 23 YEARS FRED! Here’s to 23 more (and 23 more after that)… bless your heart ;)

xoxo, me

To roast, saute, bake and PHOTOGRAPH!

Whole Foods | ArtFoodHome.com

Produce Aisle – Whole Foods, Mount Pleasant, SC

What a stunning display of color, don’t you agree? Just look at these beets. I always thought beets tasted like dirt, I was so wrong. If you roast them, they have a sweetness to them that you will not believe!  Give it a whirl!

You can roast them whole (scrub them good, cut off any leaves, but don’t peel). Then preheat oven to 375 F. Coat them with olive oil, then wrap in aluminum foil and place on a baking sheet. Roast 45-60 minutes (or until done). Remove from oven and let cool 10 minutes. Peel and slice into 1/4″-inch thick slices. Recipe: Bobbie Flay/Food Network

Ina Garten she peels, slices and roasts and then tops with orange juice, GOOGLE it! You won’t believe the wonderful combinations!

Port Clyde, Maine | ArtFoodHome.com

Several years ago we rented the coolest cottage in Port Clyde, Maine… The Periwinkle. Oh how I love that cottage. So cool, it was like a movie set inside. Very rustic, which was part of the charm, a large roaring fireplace and just steps from the ocean.

It was only a short walk to the Port Clyde General Store or to Marshall Point Lighthouse. I would like to live there, ha ha… Wouldn’t we all?

My mom and dad joined us for their 50th wedding Anniversary that year – way to go mom and dad! There aren’t a lot of people who can say that these days. I took this photo on that visit! I love it! So this year is their 57th Anniversary!! Woohoo, you guys are the best!

Today is also my sister’s birthday, Bridget Jennings… Happy birthday to you! Make it a special day – you certainly deserve it!

Enjoy your birthday! Wish you were here to celebrate!

Charlie in charge…

Charlie | ArtFoodHome.com

Hey! I’m Charlie! Giving the human the day off… sharing a few of my favorite things with you… she’ll be back tomorrow!

I love grabbing the humans socks… gets them all riled up. They chase me around and eventually I end up with a treat (carrot or frozen green bean). It’s taken several years, but I think I have them trained…

Charlie on his way downtown

I love to feel the wind in my hair! Someone is always threatening to make me wear Doggles!

Charlie in the sprinkler!

I love a good sprinkler! There is nothing better than passing a house with a sprinkler while on my morning walk! I dive right in, get soaking wet, ahhh, it makes me smile! Also love when the humans water the grass – they laugh at me!

charlie favorite things

Hee, hee… have I got her trained or what? She makes my healthy treats look fancy (well, sometimes)… two of my favorites: Pumpkin and whole grain pasta. She’s a little stingy with the pasta, but I’ll take what I can get!

Charlie | ArtFoodHome.com

Friend or foe? I’m not really sure. They come and visit (or torture?) me by sitting on the windowsill!

Of course! What do you expect? I am a dog, hee hee…

SURPRISE CHARLIE! It’s me! The human… and you thought I forgot… Happy 6th Birthday!! xxoxoxoxoxox, love us!

Charlie IS 6!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR CHARLIE!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

…AND MANY MORE!

A bit quirky?

barbara stroud | ArtFoodHome.com

Fred and I have started doing something over the past few years… it might be odd, but we like it… we’re removed some paintings from their frames. Not that the frames were bad, it’s just that we have so many paintings, and after a while it seems like you’re looking at so many frames it becomes distracting. We’ve taken a few paintings out of frames and have hung just the canvas over the years, and love it.

On left wall from top to bottom: Tim Bell, Marc Hanson, Dan Corey

On wall in front of you starting at top left and going clockwise: David Kasman, Marlee Brown, Don Stone and Ted Tihansky

Nothing like great memories, and each and every one of our paintings have just that!

Catch you back here tomorrow!

Oh say can you see… Photo of the day…

Happy 4th of July, or more appropriately – Happy Independence Day! How many of you remember the words to the national anthem?

If you’re a little rusty, this is for you! Enjoy your day and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow!

Star Spangled Banner

O say can you see,
by the dawn’s early light,
what so proudly we hailed
at the twilight’s last gleaming,
whose broad stripes and bright stars,
through the perilous fight,
o’er the ramparts we watched,
were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare,
the bombs bursting in air,
gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there.
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
o’er the land of the free
and the home of the brave?

O thus be it ever,
when freemen shall stand
between their loved homes
and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace,
may the heaven-rescued land
praise the Power that hath made
and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must,
when our cause it is just,
and this be our motto,
“In God we trust.”
And the star-spangled banner
in triumph shall wave
o’er the land of the free
and the home of the brave!
