Nasturtiums – The happiest of flowers in my opinion. I love this vibrant orangey/red – My mom plants nasturtiums in their yard and always has small vases full of these stunning flowers. They’re so bright and happy – they totally make a space. But did you know they’re more than just a pretty face?

Petunias! Aren’t they the best? Some plants and flowers don’t need a thing, but petunias need to be deadheaded in order for them to bloom profusely. I love that few minutes spent looking for spent blooms and plucking them off. It’s a nice meditation early in the morning before it gets too warm outside. Almost daily I can pull off more blooms and they did beautifully.

We were taking our dog for his daily walk around the block (we try to fit in a few) – and I came upon this pretty iris. The purples so dark, the greens so green, and that little splash of yellow in the bloom – stunning. Thinking about plants for our yard – I really want some color, but… our yard is tricky.

Monhegan, Maine. A place of utter peace and tranquility. The most gorgeous views you could possibly imagine… History, everywhere you look. If you’re familiar with paintings from Monhegan, you will likely have seen a painting or two of the old lighthouse keeper’s house and outbuilding – what is now the Monhegan Museum of Art & History. If this is a photo, you can only imagine the stunning paintings. Vibrant blue skies, stark white with red roof. Just beautiful!

I saw these palms on a walk and I thought of Palm Sunday – what a nice thought to post the gorgeous palms coupled with the blooming azaleas! I love these wild palms that just pop up wherever they please. They usually appear where you don’t want them (on the very edge of a walkway for example), but occasionally they land in a good spot. We have one in our yard that we let get rather large (tree) it’s amazing that it all starts from these thin palm branches.

We live in an area of Charleston, SC with a lot of live oak trees. They’re magnificent and grand and have been around for almost a century. Many have Spanish moss hanging from their limbs. They have resurrection ferns growing over the large branches (look at image and it looks like crunchy dead brown ferns on the larger dark limbs) – once it rains, they turn magically green and looks like the prettiest ferns you’ve ever seen!

Do you remember how it feels to be relevant? Your presence KNOWN. People around you see and hear you. Your voice is heard. People think you’re interesting. Whether it’s you or your travels, your stories, etc. You are heard. I’ve noticed over the past many year that the general population acknowledges the elderly less and less – to the point that some feel as if they’re invisible. Our older generation is amazing and so interesting. They’ve lived full lives and done fabulous things. Ask them questions about their lives. You won’t believe the responses – how truly fascinating they can be. You won’t know unless you ask.
It’s a natural progression that usually tends to happen, but it can (and should) be different. Why is there a tendency to stop interacting with the very people that are the most interesting? It’s all normal, I know, but it’s still unfortunate. I think that as a nation we tend to forget about our elderly. Thankfully, some people are fantastic with older people (🙌). They keep them feeling relevant and important BECAUSE THEY ARE!
Our neighborhood recently lost a dear man, 92 years old. He was always outside walking – he knew everything about everyone. He was wise. He cared AND he remembered everyone’s names – which was so amazing (I remember the dog’s name 🤷♀️) He was so interesting to talk to, and every time I turned down that street I kept my eye out for him (and out of habit, still do). Reading the obituary for our neighbor, there were so many subjects that we could have talked about – I knew about where he worked, and the parties he went to when he was younger – but there was so much I didn’t know. He did so many cool things. I never knew he was an artist (among other things). I don’t usually pry into people’s lives, I’m more of an introvert, but because I’ve known this man for so long and have talked to him so often, I just didn’t THINK to ask. I guess I assumed he would tell me…

Our elderly neighbors are treasures. So if you have one in your neighborhood (or your family!), reach out – if you talk to them daily ask them questions about their lives. Most don’t want to brag and that’s why they don’t tell you their stories. It’s not bragging at all it’s simply THE STORY OF THEIR AMAZING JOURNEY. If you’re older and reading this – PLEASE, share YOUR story!
If you do have a neighborhood child or relative talk to you, share your life with them. They may be so fascinated to know you didn’t just sit in a recliner all your life, you were out LIVING and doing magical, interesting, brave, spontaneous things. Older people are so cool. #meincluded #haha We can do better for our older generation. We need to be there for them.

To those of you who haven’t been to Monhegan Island (Maine) – Wow. It’s a tiny island, for those who love the outdoors, love to hike and see beautiful things, eat wonderful food and visit with some of the nicest people. The hikes can be fairly easy or tough depending on which trails you choose (buy the trail map!) – the water is gorgeous and so different from the wharf side to the rocky side.

The other day we were out running errands. You know, the typical groceries, Costco (sometimes), Target (sometimes) and wherever else we need to head to. We popped in Celadon, because it’s nice to look around, see what they’ve got. It helps when you (or someone you know) is looking for a specific something – we take quite a few recognizance trips, to check out – see what’s available. Then in the future if we are in the market for a sofa, etc. we’ll have an idea what’s out there.

Such a pretty setting, isn’t it? All the pink blooms, with pops of white (and the cool blue chair) – all set in an English green space. Gorgeous! We stopped in Elizabeth Stuart Design (ESD) a week or two ago, looked around and then took a peek outside at the beautiful plants, furniture, etc. This setting is simply gorgeous! Bougainvillea’s are pretty amazing…

Charlie. He’s the sweetest beast. I took this photo last summer when I walked outside and there he was on the sofa cushions, head on the armrest. I’m not sure if he was deep in thought or if the sunshine had lulled him to sleep. One of his micro naps that gives him energy for hours, ha ha.

What are a few things that can make your day? It’s amazing how small it can be. It doesn’t have to be glitz and glamor, sometimes, the simple things bring the biggest smile and feeling of peace. A few of my things: A good book, this coffee mug (that is my everything mug – more on that…) and flowers. Who doesn’t love flowers? Especially flowers that express themselves so well, ha ha.

A simple sunflower. So colorful, so full of life, hope and possibilities. Sunflowers are strong to be able to hold the flower up and track the sunshine. Prayers for Ukraine are on my mind, like most people, we see what’s happening and it’s devastating, chaotic and senseless. I just want all the innocent people who have done nothing to provoke such attacks to be ok and free from such devastating loss. Say a prayer for every single person who is helping the people who need it so desperately.

Spring in Charleston is literally an explosion of color. The stunning array of bright colors and scents wafting through the air are absolutely magical. This is my very favorite part about spring.
